    Noisey first gear

I have a s6 2.2 Avant- I dont know if its my paranoia due to the problems with my s2, but first gear seems to be getting noisey- a wurring sound a bit like old cars make. Mines done 182000 with original 6 speed gear box, not bad I suppose, but has anyone had similer experience? All other gears sound fine. By the way to those that might be interested I have had the s2 crank ground and its about to be reinstated so any info on the best way to put the engine back in the car would be much appreciated ie turbo + manifolds on or off best way etc .

Replace the gearbox (and rear diff while you are at it) oil with a fully synthetic oil. It made a world of difference to my S2.

Could this be caused by the "wider" and hardened gear on the 1st gear??

            Hello

From what I've learned the 95 and later models of the S2 and S6 have the RS2 wider first gear, This wheel is hardened and wider between the teeth than the older models. I'm not sure if if this is the case here, but my tranny sounded (it's broke now) just like you describe, it sounds like metal against metal contact, or almost like you have a have some poker cards attached to a bike wheel (like you did when you were a kid, just not that loud, but the same kind of noise).

I also had this problem, or if it is a problem, I'm not really sure about that, however my tranny broke down yesterday. 6500 rpm and I popped the clutch and a LOUD bang came from down the tranny , now the car doesn't drive anymore , however I was already planning a swap for an RS2 tranny with the hardened widened wheel. I'm suspecting something went reeeeaaally wrong (how can I not, with the big bang and all) , I'll tare the tranny apart in a few weeks time, then I'll see what happened.

Not sure if this helps you out though..

Easiest way I have fount in re installing the engine in S2 / Ur S4 / Ur S6 is to have the engine fully built, i.e all manifolds, turbo, alternator etc and bolt it to the transmission on the ground. This is of course with the front of the car stripped down. Installation can then be carried out from underneath the car, or directly from the front.

Fitting the engine then replacing the manifolds and turbo last can be a swine, not something I'm keen to repeat.
