S2 want stay in 2nd gear

A friend of mine got a problem with his tranny yesterday. When giving it some trottle in 2nd gear it goes into neutral.. Only in 2nd gear.

Any Ideas? Some say it's the sync but I really can't understand why the sync should have anything to do with this..
    ?

    Thanx

Certainly sounds like second gear synchro.

A mate of mine had the same problem on his Rover Metro GTa (of all things). We cooked the brakes and he had to stick it in second at 80mph to avoid over shooting a roundabout. After that you had to hold it in second otherwise it popped out into neutral.

When the box was stripped he found he had sheared of several teeth from the second gear synchro.

Synchro shot to bits - BTDT - twice in the past year!!!

Age and distance of the gearbox, and spirited driving!

so bits of the synchro doesn't allow it all the way into position, therefore it jumps out again? So if we take it apart it wont only be visible wear, but actualy damaged?

Anyone rebuildt their gearbox, or just bought a new one?

No, it's more the opposite really - the synchro fully engages, but because it is very worn it will not hold in position.

What happens is the side that gets loaded heavily becomes damaged with time.

If it pops out of gear under power (accelerating) then the damage will most likely have been the result of hard acceleration.

If it pops out of gear when lifting off (decelerating), it is most likely the result of changing down at higher speeds, and the engine is trying to stop the car - it loads the opposite side of the "teeth" on the synchro.

I have had a gearbox rebuilt badly by a dealer which was expensive.

I also bought a used gearbox, which is cheaper, but it was as old as the original so it has also worn out.

Now I am looking at inspecting the best parts for both and buying only the new parts I really need.

The most likely damage is the lower gears because they take the highest torque loads.

                Syncro!!!!!!!!!!

ERM THE SYNCROS only if you could imagine for one moment.
go over your gear ..they are there to speed up the gear or slow it down depending on shifting up or down gears high revs low revs..
so the syncro does not hold the hub into place on the gear its there just to speed up or slow down gear as already said,,,
The hub is what holds onto the gear they have what are called dog teeth on them when they wear away your gears start popping out and if like on s2 gearboxes these get bent over that will make it hard for you to select gear even though your syncros are fine ... so your problem has nothing to do with syncros unless you are crunching into gear all the time which will cause the dog teeth to wear away,,,

But in a transit there is about ten tricks to stop it jumping out of gear and dont hold it in as you will put that much pressure on the hub and it will spring apart leaving you stuck in gear and well she will then cook and blow..
sadly canny tell you the tricks as its how i make my bread and butter doing these
( would get told of as its a company secret) i hope this helps you out ..

the forks on a transit ( the bits that move the hub) wear away also not allowing the gear to engage fully so it will pop out also usually caused by holding onto the gear stick with pressure while changing gear ( we all do it )
but usually when you take out your gearbox as you know new clutch bearings in the box an all new forks an syncros and remove any burs on the hubs ,,
hope this has been some help....

because it said tranny thought transit not trasmission ,, suppose i should have thought of man dressed in womans clothes but yeh what i said still goes .. with the syncros they dont hold your car in gear,,,

Yep I guess pixsaudisex2 is right here - the hubs are the bits, the synchros are a part of it and I think we tend to say synchros when we mean the entire assembly, which includes the hubs. They'd be the bits with the dog teeth as rightly pointed out - those are the teeth I am referring to that get a lot of wear and "bend over".

Supposedly had the hubs and a lot else changed on my original g/box - but I think the new parts were never fitted...

So pixsaudisex2 are you working at a place that repairs/builds/rebuilds gearboxes? Do they do beefed up parts too?!!!

now we're talking this makes sense I couldn't in my wildest imagination understand how syncros could make this happend, but since everyone said "syncros" then I just put my understanding away and accepted the reasons.. But I wasn't that wrong after all then, great

thanx I will give my friend the information, and he will probably buy himself a 2, hand box

(sorry don't know the right name in english.. so part number only )

                          012 311 271G (shifter gear 2nd?)
                          012 311 247F (sync ring)
                          012 311 311D (coil)

The numbers look about right but I didn't have these parts so cannot confirm. Looks like the gear, sync ring and the spring set.

yep the number is correct for syncro ring,, 6 speed
so as they say the rest must be right,,,(part numbers that is)
an well yeh i can get very good deals for gearbox reconin for you guys an gals but it is true what they say about audi prices when it comes to parts for these even though the syncros are about 25 uk pounds a second hand box is always a bonus to have to strip for parts when doing such i job..
sadly due to the nature of s2 boxes i canny do them with out a press this involves work at a cheeper rate but none the less companys are companys..
suppose the next time i see one i should take a few pictures of the inside.... an well bigger parts dont happen inside a gearbox that is designed to be the best of the company,
except for rs2 gear box but hey that aint audi an well try getting on of them...
