  • 5 and 5 speed 01E differences

So, what are the differences between the 5 and 6 speed 01E gb's? Apart from the number of gears and gearing (gears for 1, 2 and 3 are the smae for both boxes!). I mean, overall length, mounting holes etc. Can I mount a 5speed =1E in a car that had a 6-speed 01E?

Reason for asking: Mental masturbation, I'm curoius. Future project...

      Ok, so, to mount a S6 5-speed 01E in a S2 Coupe I need the 6-speed linkage (from a S2 ABY or RS2) and 6-speed mounts from a S2 or RS2, right??

Well, the late 5-speed 01E's are as strong as RS2 units but like a third of the cost. For my new project I need to replace the whole driveline for MOT reasons - I need to go cheap but make room for improvment. If I can't get hold of a 6:er, well, a 5:er it is...

Yeah, I believe some 2.2T's and all 4.2's were sold as 6-speed:ers. The 5-speed boxes in the S6 2.2T shared 1st gear tech with Rs2.

I don't think it's mental to go 5 speed! If it is much lighter I would choose 5 instead of 6. The engine has enough torque to make 6 gears a bit excessive, don't you think?
