    Vibrating and slipping clutch problem

After enjoying a trouble free S2 for a couple of weeks my clutch has started playing up today.

On they way home from work standing in traffic (Ironically the same place where my MAF broke about 5 months ago) I lifted my foot of the clutch and the peddle started vibrating.

First gear then engaged not as directly as normal and i got a lot of slip at the biting point accomplished by vibration through the peddle. When pushing the peddle in for second i felt the engine vibrating quite heavily, The higher the rev the more vibration through the peddle.

3rd and 4th engages fine but as soon as i hit 3000rpm or .2 bar boost the clutch starts slipping and the revs go sky high...

Reverse gear engages even worse and doesn't bite until the clutch is right up and after plenty of slip.

Does any one know what this could be. I have searched the archives a bit and found a few threads on clutch problems that all seem to end in hefty bill.
But so far have not found anything on vibrating peddle.

Im not sure when/if the clutch or master cylinder have been changed. (91/3b/125K)
But the brakes were bled about a month ago and the clutch was not done.

if the clutch is fecked then naturally i will take the opportunity as an excuse to buy a clutch kit or better pressure plate.

Is there any group buys going on ATM?
    Cheers guys.

Strange that the symptoms apeared so suddenly Could possibly be oil that's made it's way onto the friction surface of the clutch. Either way it's engine or gearbox out to resolve. Not such a bad job if you can do it yourself. Clutch will set you back upwards of £200 depending what you opt for.

          Thanks Steve,
Yeh i was surprised myself. It just happened from one gear change to the next and i have had no previous clutch slipping, apart from occasionally second gear not biting until clutch is all the way out if reves are to high or if clutch is bought up to slowly, But i think this is normal.

Unfortunate i don't think my mechanical knowledge is good enough to do a clutch change. Doing the cambelt was pushing it and that was after having been helped a couple of times. also i am limited to my local car park as i know no one in totnes/south devon aria that has a garage ..

          Thanks anyway.

          Bo.

Hi Bo, sorry to hear your having more problems, it never rains but it pours and all that...

Ive got a 3B uprated clutch and coverplate that i sourced a little while back for when i was gonna go to single mass flywheel, but as car is going, this is up for sale.

Cost me £185 from memory from Precision Clutch, several people were running these not that long ago, inc Doug, Tom, Mark etc so they are deffo up to the job, if you're interested let me know.

Also, im no master mechanic, but if you have the tools and room to do this work yourself, i dont mind coming down to give you a hand, i have a mate in Taunton anyway, so could get a few days away if you wanted a hand doing it yourself perhaps?

Put it this way tho, when mine was done by a VW Tech that had never done a 4wd one before, it took them nearly 3 days to fully disassemble and reassemble and that was on a ramp, with proper airtools etc, so it might be very long winded on the floor, esp as most bolts, nuts etc will prob be seized / rusted.

Let me know if you want the clutch or help with any of the work.

When I helped darron do his clutch for the first time it took use about 15hours all in on a ramp with air tools etc, but had to repair a broken gearbox mount too. That was on a 3B BTW

                      Hi Greg.
15 hours on a ramp with proper tools probably = 35 hours on axle stands with halfords tools... lol...

well at least i know whats coming..

                      Cheers mate.

If the exhaust/turbo bolts are Ok, it's not a bad job. all you need is a flat area and an engine hoist. I've done it by myself a couple of times and it took me about 7 hours. Much better to do it with the help of a few S2 buddies though

Ok, maybe the clutch is not broken and it has jsut had oil leeking into it.. (as good as broken i gues).

Here is a little oil leak that i have had ever since i bought the car, its one of those things that you know needs doing but its such a PITA to do that you dont do it until something goes wrong.. hence me feeling like .

I have attached two pics (one close up) of the pipe that i dripping oil, could this be the problem?
