ABY / 3B front driveshafts, are they the same?

    Hi,

Doing a bit of research for "Project 400"

I plan on a future replacement of my gearbox, with a nice strong one However, as I'm collecting parts, I just need to know if I should replace my 3B front driveshafts with ABY parts?? From my reading, it's hard to tell if this is neccesary, or if this is just something that needs to be done with a 7A conversion... expert opinion / BTDT advise welcome!!

    Cheers

Cheers.... I gather from this, that the 3B has the correct 108mm flange, but the shaft is too long due to the 6-speed being a wider box... hence I should get the ABY front drive shafts. If I'm wrong in this please let me know!!

      Thanks!

They are the same. I don't have a clue why most people say otherwise.

Really?? Hmm, so I guess it's just the prop I'll be needing. Brings down the cost I guess

Guess I just need to figure out mounts, a subframe spacer and how could I forgot... slave + master cylinders! Any tips?

You don't need the master. Standard is fine.

I've read that it's advisable to change the master... is there good reason for this or is it just excessive precaution?

Looks like I'm rather committed to this one now, as I've got sources on a box, linkages, ABY prop, poss. aby slave cylinder. Anyone have dimentions on a spacer?? I've heard it's 20mm...

                  Cheers

If your'e reffering to the spacer between the engine and the gearbox, it's more like 5mm or so. But there's no need for the spacer if your'e running the single mass flywheel, although the engine may have to be moved back a few millimeters. I think the holes in the engine mounts allows that kind of movement.

I was referring to the subframe spacer actually... I'll be keeping my 3B flywheel, and I have a 3B clutch (clutchnet) to go in the mix. the engine will be coming out for this one, so moving it a little shouldn't be a problem, if there's provision for that.

                      Cheers

The engine mounts are slotted and will easily take up the movement required to use the single mass flywheel.

Hmm, read through that one - it's what confused me about whether or not I'd need the front half-shafts

Sal has me sorted for an ABY prop, so I'm planning on just using that rather than a chop + balance... he had the front shafts too if I needed them. What a star

Look like I'm almost sorted on this one...a big thanks to all the BTDT experience and advice btw! I'll be sure to document this one when it gets done (not sure when that'll be lol), hopefully with pics etc

                            Cheers

dont forget an aby one is even shorter as you have a spacer between the engine and gear box for the dual mass clutch, not sure how thick the spacer is tho,
