Hi,
A nice package from VagParts arrived (I thought it was my rods...) and of course, though it was almost dark when I finally got home from work I had to go to town.
Good news is, the short-shift kit can be fitted rather easily under the glow of the interior light... great instructions provided, very easy to follow and really (for the 5 speed at least) easy to fit. ONE minor niggle, the locking ring is an absolute ******* to remove from the stick without neccesary tools!! After a half hour of stabbing myself in the hand with various different tools and turning the air blue, I got the ******* off. There was no way the new one was going on, so after some thought I went looking for a small pair of scissors that could be used to pry the thing open... a few minutes or manipulating the centre console and fitting everything back an all was good...
First impressions - the throw is MUCH shorter! I didn't expect such a difference, it just pops into gear now. It definitely makes smooth shifting easier, and I bet on the strip it'd be quite noticeable... lightening 3-4th shifts are easy if required
It really feels quite like the 6-speed Golf-TDI box to me now in terms of throw and 'nochiness', if anyone is after a comparison.
Plus, no more metallicy rattles on shifting anymore; I think the linkages were rubbing slightly and the kit must have altered how they sit slightly. All in all, it take a trip round town to get used to the 'new box' but that's how it certainly feels to me, like new, and it's definitely a mod I'd recommend if you enjoy a spirited S2 drive...
Cheers
Ross

Not that I'm making a habit of that one...
