    1st into 2nd Crunch + Pop-up Gearstick!!!!

when accelerating off in 1st right up to redline (7000rpm) when i try and slip it to 2nd i have to delay it a bit, push it in too quickly and it grinds real bad. every other gear's fine. just first into second.
The only other problem i have but don't know if it's related is that sometimes when near the redline the gearstick can pop up and wont let me select gears till i push it back down!!! A little scary!!!!!

If I adjust my seat so I can stamp my clutch right into the floor its a little better but i still have to delay just not as much. Every time i hear them grind I just wanna tear my ears off, all that I picture in my head is gears with rounded teeth!!!!!!

It is the 2nd gear syncro that is on its way out!

I've found the short-shift kit has helped me quicken up the shifts, but can relate to this one too... I think it doesn't help that there's the biggest difference in RPM at least with the 5-speed, 7k in 1st goes to 4k in 2nd - so you best have that clutch depressed all the way... I love those shifts where you get the revs matched right and barely even use the clutch Usually 3rd-4th for those ones!

I get that too on 1st to 2nd, on mine its just worn syncros, have to give it just that half a second longer before i select 2nd or it will crunch. The higher the revs in 1st the more difficult it is to change.

I once had to drive my Audi 80 TD 80 miles with a broken clutch, surprising how quickly you get used to the rev difference between gears when you dont have a working clutch. I had it down to a tee, even idleing in 1st gear at all the traffic lights

This is a common fault on Mk2 16v Golf's and its the gears giving up apparently. both my mates with GOlf 16v's have this problem and its only in to 2nd that it does it.

I can select 2nd coming out of 1st without any problem and at any rev BUT I have noticed that on full throttle, in all gears, if I leave my hand on the gear knob, it feels like the whole transmission is perfectly balanced and engineered ( feels like a dead piece of steel that isn't connected to anything ) EXCEPT when in 2nd...

There I can feel a sort of humming vibration coming thru the lever all across the rev band... Not annoying at all but after reading the previous posts, am I assuming too much when saying that the 2nd gear on our cars is the weak point of the 6 speed g/box ?

Has anyone else noticed this ? Will it worsen if I get more POWER ?

I get exactly the same problem as well, it seems to be a common fault, I find that its the speed the car is going which trys to stop me going into second.

I can change into second when i'm doing under 40MPh but as soon as I go above that speed i get the same difficultie putting it into give and with a loud crutch.

Is there anyway of fixing this problem?

Does it also happen if you double clutch and toe/heel ?

This problem I have noticed in all old audi's I've driven.
The problem is better if the cars been looked after more. Still there is a feeling of 'this is not right'. You would only notice because you drive a smooth going audi that makes everything appear effortless its in the soul and nature of the car. Its why we drive the beast.

So when thinking about proper rinsin it just remember she's old she's 4wheel drive alot of metal to move for an old clutch designed to a cost manufacture and a gearbox thats shifted more times then I've had hot dinners.

                          Nevermind that... anyways
double de-clutchin works if your (quick is the wrong word) synchronized with her enough. Hard to do and I don't get it right time and time again but when I do its great.
Of course this doesn't help with the wear on all parts of the car used to do it.

                          in short 'nothing lasts forever'

Had this with my Golf 8v. It finally gave up when I was overtaking 2 to 3rd and it stuck in 3rd. Re-con gearbox time and even then it wasn't much better! the 50bhp over the standard 1800 might have had something to do with it giving up!
