    Dual mass or aluminium flywheel?

Right then, the AAN engine I have in the rally car has a dual mass flywheel. Simple question, Do I change it for an aluminium one? If so where from and how much? Post or PM me with the prices.

Another option which i'm doing would be a 3B flywheel and crank pully, a happy medium in terms of weight.

Tis a great topic this... Single mass flywheel is the way to go for pure performance. Not as smooth as the dual-mass approach, but I'm guessing that Pembo could care less about that. A lighter flywheel will allow the engine to accelerate faster...

The risk with flywheels is that if they are too fragile, then major damage will occur if there is a failure.

I know that some trusted folk on here are running with custom made aluminum flywheels. If they are seen as too risky then the flywheel from a 3B engine is the right answer. This has a different bearing for the gearbox input shaft.

Nice thing about the 3B flywheel is that it opens up options for heavy duty clutches from Sachs and others that are suitable for motorsport applications.

can you get a hvy duty clutch for an ABY?

if not will a 3B flywheel fit straight on without mods?

I can see myself heading for a recon gearbox and want to get everything done in one hit if poss. sports clutch and flywheel mod!!

Back again! I have a 7A flywheel lying about and the dual mass flywheel is not good for my competition clutch options. Does anyone know if the 7A will do the job or has anyone got a 3B flywheel?

A lil off topic, but will anyone with an ally flywheel from Jeffers or similar be at Inters, i'd be interested to see the difference in revving, im obviously aware of the gains in theory but am interested to see the actual runnings of it.... so revving stationary.

                      Ant,

I'm using a Fidanza 9lb ally flywheel in my Avant. I'll be at Inters so you can have a listen/play see what you think. You can't really tell on it's own but when you compare it side by side with a standard car there is quite an improvement.

Cool thanks Ben, the S2 is so lazy in the way it revs up and down so wanna see what its like.

Did you re-balance your bottom end when you fit yours? i know the topic has been covered several times but dont recall ever hearing about your car coming apart.

Its something i would love to do as its a good way of making more of what is already on the car.

I don't subscribe to the bottom end needs rebalancing theory and it's an age old discussion that I'm not gettting back into.

I've had the flywheel in since mid December last year and it hasn't fallen apart yet.

@Pembo, You could use the 7A item but its heavier than the 3B one. Heres some info i found on the weights,

                              3B flywheel 10.5kg
                              7A flywheel 11kg
                              ABY flywheel 14kg
                              3B pulley 4.26kg
                              7A pulley 4.3kg
                              ABY pulley 5kg
