Will any six speed fit my S2 Avant??

Hi Everyone,

My Avant is having its gearbox replaced at the mo and the guys doin the job say that the replacement box I gave them is different from the original and won't fit. The new box came from a 1993 S4 and my car is a 1994 S2 Avant. The intention was to fit this box as a temporary measure while I had my box rebuilt and possibly modified with the strengthened first gear.

Any ideas??

Whats the code on the box? if it's DSY or EDU it will fit it's been done before by forum members.
If it is fit the box and ditch your original as they are better than the S2 boxes.

The code off the new box is CBL and the original is CGR. Not quite the same!!!

The cbl is normally off the earlier 6 speed cars around 1993/94
The only differences I can think of are the s4 mounts but they can be used off your old box.
I've also been told there are two types of dual mass flywheels but whether this will stop the box from fitting I dont know.
In what way does the box not fit?

I was told all audi gearboxes fit in all audi cars. my mate has also a passat gearbox in his audi 80. It is just a matter of gear ratios and strenght.

The CBL box should fit without any problems.

Is the CBL a weak box then? Just wanted to know cause my 94 s4 has one.

First gear in my CGR box is trashed, so I only wanted this CBL box to get the car running, and I thought it was cheap at £350. I think when the guys at the garage took the CGR box out of the car and compared it with the CBL , they noticed the mounts and linkages where different , but these can be swapped from the CGR. I'll let you know if it fits and how strong the first gear is!!

Just had the avant back with the CBL gearbox replacement. The lads had a bit of a struggle fitting it because of the rear mounting which is totallt different to the CGR box! Anyway all done and it's great having a first gear again, and a proper gate that won't allow reverse selection without depression!!!

While it was there I had the cats out and some stainless bypasses fitted, some new oe discs and pads (saving for rs2 conversion), a new lambda sensor, some S8 rims and the back water hose repaired! Not bad for a couple of days work. Still waitng for coilpack conversion from Corey (top bloke) and then I can drive it again!

I'll post some pics soon and you can let me know how it's looking!
