Back from QRSport again! (And once again very pleased with their expertise!) As expected the oil leak was from the back of the gearbox where the propshaft mates to it. What we didn't expect was that the leak wasn't from a bad seal, but from the fact that the entire bearing was loose in its housing! This gave a good few mm of travel in the splined shaft that goes into the 'box. The oil was actually leaking around the sides?! Not sure if this could have caused any problems further down the transmission as I couldn't figure out if it'd give fore and aft movement in the propshaft?

Thankfully Tim had a replacement from a spares car that they could bolt on. Now it's back together and the 'box refilled with new oil it is certainly changing gear better, with less 'shunt' in the driveline when taking up drive. Hopefully the oil leak is plugged too .. will take a few days for the remaining old oil to burn off the cats ....

    ... fingers crossed!

Got the same problem with my 'new' box, seems to be leaking at the back of the box and dripping on the bypass pipes! Stinks a bit! So it could be a seal or the whole bearing housing?

Sorry to hear that mate. Pretty unpleasant smelling that burning plastic type odour every time you get out of the car.

Thought mine was just the seal that had gone - costs about £8 from Audi but takes 1.5 - 2 hours to fit the b*****d. Was the first time that Tim had seen a totally loose bearing there though, so fingers crossed that yours is okay!

The CBL gearbox is being removed as we speak, it's leaking badly! I might get it fixed and have my CGR box rebuilt and put back in.

Havin a mare with this gearbox!! I was told by the place I bought the box from that the casing at the back of the box can be removed and re-sealed to stop the torrent of gear oil! When the lads at the garage did this all of the selectors dropped out and now the box needs a rebuild at a minimum of £300!!

To add to the misery, my old CGR box which had a noisy first gear was used as a dummy run before they tackled the one in the car adn they bent all of the selectors and scrapped the box!!!

It's true what they say 'pay cheap, pay twice!'
