    S2 Gearbox

    Hi!

Can someone tell me little bit more about gearboxes?
    So, my questions:
    1) Does other gearboxes (from S4 as an example) fit on my S2 91' (gearbox code ARV)?
    2) What indicates that the gearboxes are not different? Somewhere I have readed smth about this code "01E" that its the same S2,S4... and the gearboxes fit 1:1 between these cars. Its true?
    3) What codes or other things should I check if I want to replace my gearbox?
    4) I have heard that wrong gearbox can cause diff damadge, its true?

      Thanks!
Can someone tell me where can I find info about an S4 (1992) stock gearbox?
What differences would be between mine grearbox and the one from S4? Will it fit?

as a brief answer to your question....

the s4 box is 6 speed and the 3b s2 (ie your car) is 5 speed

think you'll need to get a shorter driveshaft and different gear linkage .. and the s4 box will fit (i also believe its stronger than the 3b box)

anyone correct me if im wrong ...

to find out more information on this .... it has been explained before so you'll need to search forum

What iam poundering is this though.
Ussually the reason for owners to change to a different box is becuse they ripped the synchros. Question is then. If you have to modify the driveshaft. Build gearlinkage and so on. Why not just change from synchro to dogrings insteed. Should be worth it for peeps that just play with the car (like me) and dont do use it everyday. Your gearchange would be faster and the dogs are extremly tough.

That then leeds to the second question. How many has actually ripped a #b 5 speed to shreads? As in destroyed the internals of the box. From what i hear here in sweden its pretty uncommon.

mmm this is interesting and seems like a valid point... if u know how .. then it might be worth posting a thread giving details of whole process including prices and pictures

--- over here when my gearbox went (due to low oil) I had then idea of stripping it...

.. i found out that u needed specialist tools for this .... so went to a gearbox specialist

ended up buying a second hand one ... this was cheapest option .... Thx Jeffer!!!!

think it cost £270 roughly ... had no problems

                Hi again!

So I got another gearbox from S2 (even code is the same -> ARV).

So I have a question. Do I need to balance the rear diff or else what? Have heard that its needed for quattro but not sure of that.

Few days ago I replaced gearbox and now when I turn to the end at left or right side and start quickly to drive from zero there is a vibration from the rear of my car. Seems like the rear diff is blocked with the diff lock, but its 100% not blocked.

What could cause this? Maybe somehow the new gearbox doesnt want to fit with my rear diff?

dog rings are on all gearboxes they are the teeth that are on the gears that the hubs engage into the syncros are the brass bits that try to stop you from smashing the hubs teeth up against the dog teeth on the gear ..

and the vibration did you put your prop back on in the same location that it came of ie all the same holes linning up.. this can cause vibraton altough not as bad as you seem to be saying...

I have ripped the internals of a 5spd apart, stripped 5th gear had about 4-5 teeth missing!(too many top speed runs me thinks!) Had to repalce pretty much everything cause when it stipped it became unbalanced and shook everything putting alot of wear on all the bearings etc. Nothing was within wear limilts! But hey i got a pretty nice new box out of it. I dont advise doing it though, so dam expensive replacing all the parts!

thanks for your answers guys! Didnt much understand (of my poor english), bet in few words, what should I do to proper mount my gearbox to the rear diff that no problems occur? I didnt notice any mark on the gearbox or on the propeller shaft. Maybe I should turn the propeller shaft step by step (between screws) and after each step test my car that no vibration occur? As I look currently at the picture, there are 6 screws on propeller shafts begining. Image here http://www.elcats.ru/audi/img.asp?mdl=141&unit=BF006468

Friend told me if I unmount gearbox then I should make some marks on the position that the propeller shaft is mounted at the gearbox, but what should I do if I have no marks at my new gearbox? There must be a way to mount these things proper

btw - I'm nost sure that the propeller shaft is the right word in english for all the stuff that comes between rear diff and gearbox

Dont' forget you need a different subframe, you need an ABY/ADU subframe to mount the 6 speed box IIRC

I have not a 6spd gearbox. The new gearbox is 1:1 as the old one (both gb have ARV code, 5 speed)!
