    Quick question about gearboxes

For the 5-speed, what's the volume of oil required if doing a 'box oil change?

I presume the safe way to do this is to first remove the fill plug and replace, as there's no point draining the box only to find you can't get the fill plug off, or that a new one won't re-seat, leaving one with no oil in the box?!

I'm thinking of using the Silkolene fully synth 75/90. Anyone else used this?

from memory its about 2-3 litres. you may as well do the rear diff at the same time too.

I take it then that the rear diff uses the same oil? I was wondering, given that box oil bottles seem to be in 5L quantities...

I think the rear diff uses something different...i'll go have a nose in the garage as I have a bottle of it in 1ltr size.

Great, so both 'box and diff use 75/90, we're all sure on that?

                      About 1,6 liters.

GB oil must be GL4 spec'd, not GL5.
You may put also GL5 in the rear diff.

Mobil VS200, Castrol TAF-X, Redline MT90 are all good choises. Don't use cheap bulk oil in the GB.

Changed with Silkolene 75/90. Instant improvement in shift quality. Lighter and more positive. Well worth doing.

How difficult is it to change the gb oil on an ABY. I am thinking it might be about time!

                          Cheers,

                            Get car up on ramp.
Undo 'box filler plug with big allen key. Check that you can re-do the filler plug.
Undo 'box drain plug with big allen key. Drain away!
                            Re-do drain plug.
Squeeze in 2.75l of box oil through fill plug using oil bottle. Re-do filler plug.

                            Job done!

So what you are saying Dan, is the Drain plugs are easily accessible if you are on your back on the drive with the car on jack / axle stands then?

                              Cheers,
