do not all these s2 s have hydraulic none adjustable cables ( not to sure ) but first and reverse would be your problem not second..
but finding it hard to get second gear sadly more than likely if its not the gear change linkage ( again unlikely if you can get the other gears) it would be either your teeth bured over on your first second hub or your syncro ring is no good this is the most likely ( quick gear change from first to second to often usually the cause) sadly to cure this it is a gearbox out and apart...

although my car has had a poor second gear change for over a year and its got no worse and ive learnt to live with it .

but have you ever changed the oil in your gearbox as well there is more moving parts designed to wear away leaving deposits in the oil than the engine does ... although this is unlikely to cure your problem.. if its only one gear,,

DAMN DAMN DAMN!!! .. its my 2nd gearbox!!!! (2nd hand) .. everything seems fine on it though ... it works perfectly ... apart from this prob... its 1st and second gear... once its in ... it works!! it is happening quite often now ..

I heard some guy on here talking about synchro... is it easy fix? ... would i need special tools to do this job? ... I have my old gearbox in the shed ... that one hasnt got this prob.... I could take the parts from it... is this feasible?

Someone on the forum suffered a problem with his g/b and mentioned the need for special tools to take it apart so ended up buying a s/h one from Jeffer as this was the cheaper option.
              Cheers

OMG!!! where is my clutch cable!!??

@chris sound like your synco is going, mine went on second as well, gear box specialist can fix it quite easily tho it is a gearbox out job

                i fitted a 6speed instead,

Filling with fresh oil can help so i'm told, never tried it as i have the same problem, usually followed by a loud crunch

Simplest solution is to get spare gearbox rebuilt.

It will not be cheap, but these cars rarely are.

                    Good luck.

( I would try the gearbox oil change first though... )

                    Cheers,

                    Steve.

Does it crunch when changing (syncro problem) or is there just resistance? Does the resistance/crunch depend on speed of engine when you change gear or is it the same all the time.

If it is always hard to change no matter what revs, then it could be that the gear linkage mechanism is worn. This is extenal to the gearbox and so you may not need to remove the g/b to fix it.

right ive checked undercar and found a bit of play in the linkage part arrowed

is this normal? ... its got 5mm play or just a bit more in a rotational direction(ie when u move gearstick from left to right it rotates)

I hope it is this that is wrong
