    SILKOLENE Silktran Syn 5?

Would any one like to confirm that SILKOLENE Silktran Syn 5 can be used in the 6 speed gear box and rear diff of the ABY S2.

    Thanks in advance, Brian.

I have just bought, and used, Silkolene Syn5 75w-90 to replace the gearbox oil in my 3B, so I would imagine the answer is "Yes". You can use the same stuff in the rear diff too.

Yep, if it conforms to GL4 And GL5 specs (which the Syn 5 does) then it can be used in both the gearbox and rear diff.

Would i be right in saying that i would need 5 litres of the stuff to do the gearbox and rear diff. If so that means i will have to fork up the not so tiny sum of £54.95 + postage ah weel it'll just have to be.

As per advice from Opie Oils (aka oilman) I used it in both.

For the 'box you'll need just shy of 3 litres, and I think the diff takes about 1.5 litres, so yes, you'll need 5litres in total - it comes in 1 litre bottles. I presume you're ordering it through Opieoils (Aka Oilman) linked to from the forum?

Have you got your forum discount number then?
(At least postage should be free if your oil is over £30)

                      5 litres should do it.

Having said that, make sure the gear box is fully drained i.e remove the two drain plugs from the gear box. I didn't do this first time round and found that when i filled it with the new oil it wouldn't allow me to get more than 2 litres in.

                      see here:

A tip I have read about is to remove the filler plugs prior to draining the gearbox and diff in case the filler plugs are stuck and so you don't get left with a empty gearbox or diff. Also get spare filler and drain plugs for the gearbox and diff in case the ones you remove get damaged whilst undoing them.

Yea i have the discount number and i had forgotten about the free postage that reduces the damage which is all good. As for the plugs that is a good idea i would'nt want to be stuck with no oil in the gearbox. Cheers for the advice i don't know what i would do without all you members of the forum .
