Noisy Diff...Only when NS driveshaft rotated though!

    ok.
So I finally got chance to put my hub carriers and hubs etc back on today.
Re assembled one side. Spot on. Only normal (quiet) diff noise when I rotate the hub manually in forward direction....

Did the other side.....and when I rotate the hub in a forwards direction it makes a much louder noise than its opposite number..

and louder than a Diff should be IMHO.

Its a hard noise to describe sufffice to say it sounds like noisy gears turning together possibly?? / grating sort of sound!

When I rotate this hub in the opposite direction (clockwise as I face it) its silent as a lamb and when I rotate the other in anti clockwise direction the same noise is apparent but obviously on the opposite driveshaft!

    wtf

Can the Diff output be noisy on only one side? (Near Side of the Diff)or in only one direction of rotation??

I have had the hub carrier off the car several times since to check all is correct and nothing catching and it seems to be A1

Also// When I rotate this driveshaft by hand with hub and carrier removed...the diff seems totally silent?? What the hell is going on here ??

Checked play in Inner Driveshaft joints. Tiny bit like < 0.5mm rotational one side. Zero mm the other (the noisy side!!) so gears seem to be in great condition

propshaft joint to Diff is like new.

When prop is rotated both driveshafts are totally quiet

    Anyone have any ideas?

I didnt test the DIff before the strip down so I dont have anything to benchmark against sadly!!

    Cheers

Hi Could your diff lock be faulty, that works on the near side, and if it is stuck in slightly would cause a noise. get under the car and manually operate the lever which is attached to the air cylinder. I will do a bit of investigating and get back to you. I am off to Gladstone over queensland in an hour and wont have PC access till saturday night when i get back. I will have a think on it.

Did you have any joy with this, i just got back from my trip, and see nobodys replied. The only other options i come up with are scary. I have had the exhaust touching the driveshaft before, and other than that, if it is definitely coming form the diff it would be bearings or teeth on the gears, what is the oil like? Flush it then run it for a few weeks then have a particle analysis done on the oil, this will tell you what metal is in the oil which could be used to diagnose a bearing, or a gear, also if there is no trouble in there at all if it is clean.

You were bang on with the diff lock idea Graham
I had put a new jubilee clip round the rubber gaiter and must have disturbed it slightly....so it got me thinking to check it anyway....

I did and manually pushed the lever back and forwards a couple of times.
In the off position all was good and a I tried pushing it halfway and sure enough a nasty meshing of gears noise like it had been making.
        job done
