short-shift gear change.. is it good conversion?

    Hi

I've just bought an ABY S2 and am thinking about getting a short-shift adaptation the gearbox... I have a friend who got it on a car a few years back and it was excellent...

Has anyone here had it done... know how much it might cost, and what it's like afterwards... was it value for money...?

Yes defintely worth it. I hadnt driven my car in a while as i was using a hire car. I had gotten so used to the short shift that now im back in mine it feels soo much better. very short shift.

I think on the group buy it cost around £30, not too sure. Only downside is for 6 speed there is no reverse lock out. some here took the old shifter and transferred the lock out across.

I'm just about to get mine fitted to the ol' 3B Kitty Kat Koupe. Expecting good things!

As a matter of interest, does the ABY shift rod have a similar joint in it to the 3B version? I am just about ready to do the military UJ coupling and I would be willing to see if it is worth offering it to other members - 3Bs are definite and others if it can be made to work. It should remove any torsional movement in the shift and would particularly revive worn out shift rods, depends on cost of course!

Theres a lot of information on this, if search for short shifter or billzcat1

You can buy the shifter directly from our own VAGParts.

ahahhhaaaa... thanks just looked at VAGparts... short shifter for S2 is £65 plus VAT... there's even a guide on how to do it... and yes you DO have to transfer over the lock out for reverse. Fasctinating. I always thought it cost hundreds ! The adaptation for 6-speed involved a bit more work... but it could be a worthwhile project. Just so long as you have another means of transport to the shops if something goes wrong!!! lol.

              S2 short shifter

Short shift kit for the Audi S2 that reduces gear change movement by approx 30%. Easy to fit! full fitting details included with kit.

Straight forward fit on the 5 speed S2. For the 6 speed gear boxes you must transfer the reverse gear lockout tab to this short shifter to retain the reverse lockout protection.

Lol well that's reassuring for me and the old 5 speed!

Terry, I'll be a while before I get Kitty back running again so you might hear the experiences of others well before mine! Also, this additional linkage work I am doing will most likely be carried out at the same time, so I won't be able to give back-to-back comparison of each stage (unless the linkage bits are not ready when everything else is).

However, every report I have read says that the short shift transforms the way the car feels to drive. I believe there was an opinion that it might actually slow the action of shifting gears, but this is more likely due to the slightly ponderous change of the S2 gearboxes. I hope that my efforts to eliminate torsional movements in the coupling will help to improve this.

Id love this mod but since I got a 6 speed Id end up with a stripped gear leaver for 3 months untill I figured out how to transfere the reverse lock thingie.
