    Strange whine from 80 Quattro..

....and no, it's not the wife!!

It's a speed related whine as opposed to engine or gearbox related.
The whine get's higher pitched at faster speeds. Only really notice it about say 40-50 mph.
If I "coast" then the noise is still there relative to speed.

Hard to tell where it's coming from, presume driveshaft??

    any ideas???

      Could be???

Can't really work out where it's coming from tbh apart from the front of the car.

Any easy way of checking it whilst stationary other than getting the missus to drive and hanging me head out of each window????????????!!!!

when driving at a constant speed with the car whining, try steering to the left and right and see if the noise increases and decreases. This could indicate a dodgy wheel bearing.

Could also be the brakes pads rubbing.

Could also be the gear box. Front diff pinion bearing is quite common fault in 012 and 01A series boxes.
Luckily whine would more probably be a wheel bearing. I'd say the usual GB noise is rustling or rattle or something between those. Hard to explain in english

I have a sort of rattle that turns into a whine at higher speeds. Front diff bearing I think. It sound worse when accelerating on decelerating. You can hear it coming from the gearbox. A worn wheel bearing sounds like it's coming from the.. err.. wheel.

OK, front of car now in bits.

n/s wheel bearing is fine. Shocker is gone and the arm. The drive shaft sounds notchy when turning it. I presume the extra vibration from driving the car with a knackered shocker has mullered the diff bearing.
Is it possible to change the diff bearings with the box in?

Also, does the S2 box fit in a 2.6 V6 Quattro as there's on on eBay at the moment if needed?

S2 box will fit Coxy, but 5 cylinder ratios are different to V6. Final drive for S2 and all 5 cylinder B3 / B4 quattros are 4.11:1, V6 quattros are 3.89:1.

Fitting a 5 cylinder box will mean your rear differential will need replacing as well.

Coxy, it will be the pinion bearings. as commented up the thread they are a common problem.

                    I know
