Does anybody have any documentation on serial numbers vs year of manufacture for the CGR gearbox? Or even better a way to determine the serial number of a gearbox a car originally had? Only thing i could find is the change to a wide 1st gear was on the 4/95 from serial number 77644
For example trying to work out the DOM for these CGR box's,

That CGR change was almost at the end of production as they changed to CRB.
What I find interesting/suspicious is ETKA does NOT list the CGR as being in *ANY* RS2s, only CRBs. I have done build tag documents for RS2s that left the Zuffenhausen Porsche factory *WITH* CRBs (see below) . That said I have another suspicion: A lot of the RS2s that left the Zuffenhausen plant with CGRs had transmission failures (due to the exuberant driving that the RS2 begged for) and that they were replaced with CRB,s likely under warranty. I further suspect that only the very rare early build RS2 will still sport its CGR.
CRB started in 03/94 but the CGR continued until after this (up to 07/95 in Coupe S2s apparently) so there's a bit of an overlap. Not so sure etka is accurate anyway and I don't think the records keeping was anything like as good back then as it is now
In my mind, which counts for nothing, I remember the ABY boxes CGR - as "Can't Go Right".
And RS2 boxes CGB - as "Can't Go Bang".
If a narrow first gear box and the engine is chipped or a higher output and driven hard it won't be a good outcome for the box in the long run.
It is worth getting a RS2 spec style box from later cars. i.e. wide first gear.
Dare I say it but I think that UrS6 have decent wide gear boxes as standard. Another reason why these UrS6 cars are completely underrated in error and are such a great bargain as there purchase price is 'so' low. They really fly below the radar even on here. Just sayin................

Ok did some detective work wading through PM's and worked out who i bought two of the box's from. Then with a bit of searching found the original "breaking" threads which produced photos from the cars revealing the registration numbers. Finally keyed those into the DVLA site and got a date of first registration.
