    Franken axles

I figure this is a very good place to see what the wonderful S2 community can throw into my pot of drive shaft stew. So I am looking into having some axles made for my car. This is a 6-speed conversion for those not aware. I am looking at 500 euro + shipping to US for RS2 units so I think I am better off getting customs. I want some axles that are hollow, before you ask I\'ll tell you tubes are better. I am just not sure what axles to get splines off nor am I sure on the OD of a stock S2 half shaft.

Would any one have a set of S2 shafts they could measure OD for me?

Also any one see a reason not to make this a 2 pc. axle setup? This would remove the outer CV and turn it into a stub axle. This would allow for a 108mm CV on the outside bolted to a flange on the stub axle. Makes a half shaft change 12 triple square bolts and out, no funny twisting or large stretch bolt to change. If you change a stock axle at the track it takes about 30 mins with the 2 pc it\'s about 10 mins. Huge savings IMO. Thoughts, comments, BTDT\'s?

    TIA

Have you got any diagrams of what you plan to do?

I do now, It\'s very rough I mean no splines just round features. It gives you an idea. It\'s a modified gut less outer CV with a flange welded on to clear the ball joint with to machined down splines off some v8q axles machined to fit inside a 1.25\" tube with a wall thickness of .188\". I\'ve been working on this for 2-3 weeks now.

basically makes the entire axles assembly easy to change and lighter using a set of LW cv\'s would help even more. So any one think it\'s worth doing? I need something with 108mm CV\'s front and rear.

Must admit I wouldn't have any knowledge on this one. What are the drawbacks with this configuration

well major draw back I can see is complexity. other then that it\'s not really all the different. It just uses an easier to get ahold of 108mm outer CV then the one piece axle spline/CV combo the stock unit has. The other advantage is the shortend axle will be stronger and able to take more power before snapping or bending. Not that any one really needs this, but it seems to me that if I am going to screw with axles as I need something to do a 108mm rear (RS2 is the only factory options for a b3 I know of) I\'ll need customs so this seems like it would be way better.

I am not going to do the work myself as I have no access to machinery with close enough tolerance to work on something this critical I\'ll be farming it out to one of the shops assuming I can find one that has the means to balance the shaft to the rpm level I want (4-5K min.)
