I have just had the 2nd and 3rd hear syncro and a new selector fork fitted to my gearbox can anyone suggest an appropriate gearbox oil. I just got a quote for £90 for 3 litres from Audi bit rich as the car will not be doing high speeds or high milage.

Years ago there was a guy named Mance, went by the moniker Pissedoff90. He was a engineer/machinist/etc. Made some good parts for our cars and did a lot of testing of various things. He ran a lubrication-pressure test on some gear lubes. He came up with the combination of 4to1 Redline MTL to Redline 90 gear oils. This is what he used in his transmission.
I have used this combo for years in all my manual cars. Never had a problem. This includes about 25 track weekends in the coupe.

Fundamentally, use fully synthetic GL-4.
GL-5 oil is what trashes syncros - do not use a GL-5 oil or combined GL-4 & GL-5 specification "gear oil". Race grade oils are more often than not formulated for use with dog boxes and no good for syncro boxes. The way the sycnros work means they need some friction in order to match the gear speeds before the collar can engage. GL-5 oil doesn't allow that to happen properly and the result is mashed dog teeth and trashed syncros.Panthero Coupé quattro 20vt
