I've had a whine in my first gear. I've read that it could be wear from the teeth on the first gear (especially if you don't have a wide first gear)

However I've been through about 3-4 trannies in about 2 years now (whoops) , and I've had 2 apart, 1 was "whining" , and that one didn't show any special wear, however the pinion layer was a little bit off, so it could be that, however you go, rebuilding is almost never as good as getting a "good" used tranny. The parts needed for a rebuild is alot of money, and I'm not sure if you can buy a narrow 1st gear anymore, so if you don't have the newer housing for the wide first gear, I'm not even sure that a rebuild is possible.

My tip: change the oil, run it until it breaks, then buy a used one. That's what I always do. It's cheaper than a rebuild (atleast in Sweden, not sure about the cost for internals in england)

    Hope this helps.

yeah i tend to agree rang a very helpful specialist who sais rebuild would be £400 to £500, he said just leave it and live with it, reckoned just as you said the hardening on the teeth had started to wear, not a bearing though.

      Thanks

It all depends of what you need to change. No entire rebuild cost 300+vat. I promise you that. I mean one gear cost £215 each.
And then the syncros, pinions and so on..
