  • How to remove an Avant outer CV

After struggling with this and not being able to find a guide or directions that worked, thought I'd write one...

The avant outer CV does not pop off like the front when you wind in the hub bolt. If you try hard enough it splits the CV in half!

Actual removal is quite simple when you figure it out...

First of all cut off the old CV boot, then clean away enough grease to reveal the circlip:

Spread this with a screwdriver and gently tap the CV:

A few more taps and it will easily slide off:

As you'll see there is a ring on the driveshaft and the CV that this circlip locks into. Removal without doing the above is almost impossible...

Hope that saves someone a few hours trying to figure it out!

I discovered this when doing mine 18 months ago. Another trick I found is to wind the bolt in until it makes contact with the drive shaft end. This lines up the CV with the shaft. Then spread the circlip and she pops off.
I have a spare used outer CV if you need one Will

Thanks Dave, I've already got a replacement sorted though.

Is it the same on Coupes? Did the bolt-trick on the rears, going to do the fronts later on

interesting haven't needed to do any work on my avant cv's yet. But did a front outer boot on my Volvo 850 t5 the other day and its exactly like your picture shows! (plenty of tips to be found on the net for those..)

Could have done with this thread about a month ago. I destroyed the outer CV joint trying to get it off.
1994 16v Coupe - Sold on and sadly missed
              1994 S2 Avant - Warmed up a bit
              1995 A6 Avant - Dag Dag Delight
