    Torsen and the MOT

Hi guys. Just been chatting to mate about the git sorry guy who usually does my MOTs, and a disagreement we had when I refused to have the landrover handbrake tested on the rollers (Its a transmission brake and exempt from that test as it causes serious harm to the drive train).

Anyway, it got me thinking about the brake test on the S2 and the effect on the Torsen diff. Is it going to cause damage to the diff having two wheels spinning whilst the other two are stationary? If so where do we stand on getting another years MOT?

Yes it does knacker the centre diff, they should test the car on the road or on a skid pan as it's permenant 4WD. It's documented on the forum in numerous posts if you search for MOT and brake test.

I always tell them before an MOT or take it to Greg_S dad at Church road garage as they do it correctly.

Good question, I think my MOT tester does it by pulling the handbrake in the yard...

When I had my RS2 MOT'ed at the weekend, the tester took it into the car park with some kind of 'G' guage which he sat on the passenger seat. Never seen one before, but all he does is set the needle to the minimum required, hit the brakes at about 20/30mph and a second needle swings around the dial showing how much force is generated. Basic but cool.

When I used to work in the testing station at Lodge tyres in Birmingham, we had to use one of these gizmo's to test a vintage armoured personal carrier

Good good, they have one of those Decelerometers at our local garage. Strangely enough it was used to test my dads armoured personel carrier as well.

If its any interest here is an online version of the MOT handbook....

I took mine in for an MOT about a week ago and he put it on the rollers to check the rear brakes.

now it sounds like theres a bearing knackered like a grinding rumbling sound but only at low speed in each gear temporarily. same sort of sound like a knackered mainshaft bearing. Gets worse when warm??

Sound like it could be related??

Torsen center diff can be brake tested whit slow speed.

Not in england the MOT test isn't done at slow speed. Porkkis said the same thing but lets say the testers in the U.K are rather heavy handed

Had mine done with a G meter a couple of years back. at my dads place its different and you drive over some pads which are longer than the car and press brakes and it measures it all in one go
