Urgent CV Joint Help please!

Hi Guys,

I have had an absolute nightmare tonight trying to change the outer CV gaiter ready for my MOT on Tuesday.

When I pulled the CV joint out of the hub it seemed to be locked at a nasty looking angle. Somehow the CV joint has shattered and locked itself on the drive shaft. I tried the trick of winding the bolt back in again to pull it off but the bolt wound itself up to its neck and locked up too!

I got it off in the end by getting medieval on it.

Before I post the gory detailed shots can anyone tell me;

a.) Why did my CV joint collapse all of a sudden? (the car had been driving perfectly up until went underneath it with no knocking or grinding whatsoever). The CV gaiter had been split for a few months, did the grease fall out and the joint over heat..?

b.) More importantly where can I get another CV joint ASAP? I want to complete the car this weekend!

The CV joint on the A3 did this after we had a fight with a concrete block. It seemed ok until I took it apart and then it fell into pieces.

Still seems strange to me. I guess it's "One of those things"....

When I did mine the interior cage locked at 90deg to the outer and I bricked it! Shouldn't have played with it I suppose.

any body know why my car wear a lot cv joints (boots) is it possible i overfit it with grease? how much grease shall i put for it just those which came with the boot when its new?
