    Shift linkage help needed

I managed to find a euro S8 6-speed manual transmission for my coupe->S2 project (I'm in the US and we didn't get the S2 or the manual S8). It's installed fine, except I have an issue with the ball & socket affair where the shift linkage attaches to the transmission. It seems the person I bought it from ripped the socket off the ball and damaged it.

I managed to find a rebuild kit at my local Audi dealer. They claimed the linkage was the same as the 6-speed A6 2.7T that we got in the states. This is what they sold me for $61.80:

As you can see from the next pic the bush(ing) in the rebuild kit they sold me is clearly too big to fit in the socket on the shift linkage.

Does anyone have any idea where I can get the correct rebuild kit, or maybe a complete front shift linkage. My project is sitting with a new turbo, manifold, transmission, etc, etc. and I can't shift it due to this issue. Thanks very much for any help that you can provide me.

What part number was the kit they sold you?

From what I can work out there are two versions:

    4A0 798 151

    and
    8D0 798 151

It looks to me like you have the 8D0 798 151 kit which is listed for euro 2.7TT A6 (I haven't updated my FA to give me ROW models yet).

Is there a part number on the shift linkage? or on one of the old bush parts?

The rebuild kit part# is: 4A0 798 151. The linkage itself has no part#. The black plastic cap as seen in my second picture has part# 4A0 711 224. The other pieces don't have part #'s. The threaded ball in the rebuild kit seems to be slightly bigger than the one on my trans 24 vs. 22 millimeter diameter. The trans code is DGV. Hope this info makes sense and is somewhat useful. Thanks very much for the help.

So I ordered the other rebuild kit, part # 8D0 798 151 and it still does not appear to be the correct rebuild kit. I'm feeling quite discouraged at this point. Does anyone know what car this linkage is from? There is no part# on it. See the folllowing image:

        Thanks guys.

So, it appears from a response I got to my issue on motorgeek that I have an S2/RS2 6-speed shift linkage. Does anyone know where I can get a rebuild kit for or an S2/RS2 6-speed shift linkage? Thanks again.

Since it appears a rebuild kit is not available. Does anyone know where I can get an S2 6-speed shift linkage? Please!?

VAG sells new ones, how much are they? I've never asked I can call them if they don't sell it in the states.

Thanks. I'll send them an e-mail and see if they have something for me.

So, 220 pounds later, I got a new S2 front shift linkage from vagparts. It didn't solve my problem. With the new linkage installed when I shift from first to second the ball on the gearshift lever pops out of the cup on the linkage. Can anyone telll me what holds the ball on the transmission gearshift lever in the cup on the shift liinkage? I'm using a euro-S8 tranny. My overpriced converted coupe is dead until I can resolve this and it's been about 2 months. Thanks for any help.

Alternatively, does anyone have a picture or diagram of a 6-speed tranny mounted in an S2 (with linkage all hooked up)?

what new parts did you buy? Did you get a complete new linkage?

                            New shift linkage

Yes, I ended up getting an entire new selector shaft #25 in the pdf I posted above. I've been told there is another piece I'm missing, listed between #30 and 31 in the pdf and not pictured. It is a bushing which holds the ball in the cup. It is available in the States, so I ordered it for $10 from my local Audi dealer. Hopefully this will solve my problem. We'll see. Thanks.

So I ordered a new spacer bush, part # 8A0-711-217 and it was not the right part. There is a brass bush inside the cup that the transmission ball goes into, does anyone know if this brass bush just gets bent over above the ball to hold it in place? I still can't figure out how the ball from the transmission stays in the cup on the linkage. This is for a 6-speed S2 transmission. Thanks for any help.
