  • Reasonable price for V8 Torsen diff?

I've been looking about for V8 rear diffs, just wondered how difficult they were to get hold of and how much they cost really.

Found one place with one, but they were after about £320... which seemed quite steep to me for an unknown unit.. what is a reasonable price to pay for one from a breaker?

Also, is dropping the diff into the S2 casing a specialist job or will i be able to do it?
I've never opened a diff before, but dropping the subby off etc shouldn't be a problem..

Also i've not read anything about the front diff - can this be modded / swapped to a torsen or limited slip type? Or not - are there any reasons why this can't be done too?

    cheers guys

I was quoted £400 for one out of an A8 4.2 V8 with 77.000miles (apparently)

I'm certainly not prepared to pay that without some hunting. It's a joke, nearly the same price as I paid for my 2nd hand RS2 box and they ain't cheap!!!

You can use a Quaife on the front (Automatic Torque Biasing) from CTS Transmissions £700+VAT

The same as TorSen...I think, but there's bound to be something I'll get shot down for tho.

Also depends how much power you go for as i've heard of a few big power cars killing them.

I assume this is to replace the rear diff on the 80 series cars? I assume also that this means the std affair is an open diff?

Whats in the middle on a normal 80 quattro, is it a torsen, plate or open type?

                cheers

The A8 didn't use the torsen rear diff. It was only used in its predecessor the V8.

yep - essentially a variant of the 100/A6 model but given special treatment due to its V8 engine and oddball (for quattro) rear diff.

technical pages on s2central.net tell you all you need but here's a quick summary for audi 80 quattro incl S2/RS2 models. Also true for almost all other quattros

                            front is open
                            centre is lsd (torsen)
                            rear is open (and lockable)

pre torsen ur's had a lockable open centre diff

                            v8 has the torsen rear

                            Torsens are NOT lockable

LSD (usually ATB flavour) are available for the front in the 01E gearbox.
