Wait though, top gear on the ur is 0.78:1 and on the S2 its 0.71:1 so the S2 has a higher top speed at the same rpms I think
That's correct, I was thinking about final drive ratio not gear ratio

UR tops out at 142mph i believe.... S2 goes till 154mph iirc?
1st on a UR is short....

I just happen to have an 016 box on my workshop floor... it is out of my UR mind. can cope with 650lb/ft so i'm told?? They used the 016 in the rally cars so i'd imagine its a very tough item.

The 016 box from the ur quattro, whilst being the strongest of the boxes, has a lower final drive ratio than the others so you will lose some top end and gain accelleration, you'll have to change the rear diff too of course. My Treser converted ur quattro is still on its original transmission after 23yrs and probably 250,000 miles (changed dashes a coupe of times and lost track of the milage).. Its an 84 so has the lockable centre diff.
First gear is very short on these cars, second is good, third has grin factor. If you've driven an S2 you could be forgiven for trying to change up from 5th.

No problems with a "weaker" first gear. Have you ever heard of anyone who broke a first gear???

I think the 6 speed tranny allows for higher top speeds than the 5th. not sure though

i wonder, does using the 3B 5speed gear box one manage to reach the top limit of the engine's speed abilities?I mean if one would like to go for the 3B gearbox, are the gear ratios wide enough to go 300kms if he likes to?

Thats my understanding. They are 5 speed and stronger as they are based on agricultural gearboxes

Please tell me more whats a 016 box? and and because they`re exotic i assume it`s gonna be expensive?
What cars are they out of and also im in a mk2 golf so maybe i might not get too many transmission problems.

If drag strips are your bag then its fair to say that no manual gearbox is up to that abuse. The big boys in that game are into funky slush-boxes and the weird world of 'air shifters'.

Jamo is right that late CGR (ABY gearboxes) have the wider 1st gear along with the CRB (RS2 box)... Dropping the clutch in 1st at the redline is a brutal experience for any manual box - life expectancy with the wider 1st gear might be a lil longer, but not at all like a health guarantee.

If drag is your thing, then I suspect an older/stronger 016 box is what you want as a minimum spec - preferably from a Shorty as its the strongest and most exotic of all.

But are they strong enough with antilag off the line

But im probably just worrying anyway i`ll just end up using the box until i break it.
