    Should i be concerned?

Was fitting my boost guage this afternoon and i depressed the clutch which was really hard to move, then suddently shot to the floor not to return.

The engine is out I should add....when i went round to the engine bay, there was a puddle of fluid at the base of the bell housing which looked to have come from the clutch slave? cylinder. Have I just pushed the fluid out as the engine is out or have i blown a seal....?

    Thoughts pls

Your not ment to press the clutch when there's no engine on!
You have just pumped the slave piston out!
put it back in (best take it out of the box first)
when you have the engine back in you can bleed the slave.

You won't have done any damage, just gave youself another job!

Get a new slave cylinder on your list. Make sure it's an OEM part as the copies being sold are about as good as the one you just broke.

by the sound of it you have pushed the rod through on the slave cylinder.which goes on the back of the bracket for thrust bearing .
loosen the bleed valve push the rod back in and put the dust cap back on. then when you put your engine back in bleed it .hope it makes sense

For the cost of the part versus the hassle to change it (unless it's new) - I would swap it now.

so seems to be a genuine thicko moment then

I'm not sure its ever been changed, at least not in the time i've owned it. Any idea how much they are?

Judging by the fuild that came out, probably good time to change it and the fluid.

            Cheers

Yep that sounds about right. Out of interest how 'tight' should the thrust bearing be? The front face ( which would butt up to the clutch) has a fair amount of front to back play, though it feels smooth turning and also there is a slight indent in the face of it too. Should i change this while I can too? Any tips on changing it?

              Cheers

                fluid puddle

with no resistance to the clutch slave piston, it sounds like you have over stressed the seals, may be an oppertunity to change the clutch slave whilst you have reasonable access to it rather than risk putting it back together for it to leak later , a couple of quid now could be good insurance later.

ps was around 60 quid from my local dealer

Get a new release bearing, not from dealer as they are all plastic! (superseeded)
Keep an eye on the bay, there is a bloke usually listing the old stock steel ones.
£2.00 !!! its the same bearing for all AUdis of our vintage, 100/200 etc..

Probably never been bled, it's suppose to be bled with the brakes but it's such a PITA most people never do it.

Correct. Dave - give yourself the satisfaction that this lil mistake will have cost you time, but you will have one of the rarest of S2's on the world in that it has freshly bled hydraulic fluid in the clutch system
