What is a dual mass flywheel and other Qs.

What is a dual mass flywheel?
What does it do over a normal flywheel and what are the benefits/drawbacks?
Were they standard on S cars?
Are there any additional items needed to fit one?
Can they be fitted when replacing a clutch?

Dual mass flywheel acts as a damper between the engine and drive train to smooth out power delivery and shifts. Its basically two plates, sprung together, that allow a bit of rotational movement in relation to each other

they obviously provide a smoother drive, drawbacks are that they are heavy and expensive.

AFAIK only the ABY coupes had them

You would need to put a spacer on the gearbox to allow it to fit where not intended as they are much thinker than normal flywheels

A single mass flywheel is a single piece solid steel wheel. A dual mass is two flywheels joined together with rubber/springs i the middle. In effect one half is attached to the engine, the other half to the gearbox. Its designed to work in much the same way the springs in a clutch plate, any sudden loads gets absorbed by the springs instead of being transmitted down into the gearbox, drive shafts, cv joints, and then into your backside.

Its main purpose is refinement, it damps out natural engine vibration, smoothes out gear changes, and gives it that little bit of a cushion when you come on/off the power.

Downside is the weight, harder for the engine to change speed so you end up with a motor that isn’t as free revving.

Single mass is the opposite, no damping in vibration, no cushion to smooth out gear changes etc. But on the flip side the engine is lighter and freer revving. IMO the main characteristic difference between a 3B and ABY S2.

ABY S2's, RS2's, ur-S4s, and S6's all had dual mass flywheels.

That spacer sits between the engine and gearbox, something like 10mm thick.

@Animal - you already have one... Mark has summed it up nicely above.

S2Central.net has an excellent page on this: look under Technical-> Transmission -> Flywheel...

Some stuff on there is 4 and 5 years old now - its like news to me when I visit some of those pages and I genuinely say to myself - thank goodness some sad **** took the time to write this down

Unfort, I'm not sad enough and/or have enough free time to update the place as often as I'd like - its no accident that once the forum got going at full strength I end up on here instead of updating zee website.
