MOT Failure / diff fault / leaky damper

Ok, got some interesting points re today's mot failure:
I know my mot guys quite well so tend to bow down to their superior knowledge.
Its the first time i've had my S2 mot'd and when I got in there I remembered to tell them its permanent 4wd and will have to have the alternative brake test.
Anyway, when they got it on the ramps and lifted the back end, the guy spun the wheel and the other rear wheel didn't move, he then jacked up the front (with the back down again) and spun the wheels, again they moved independantly with no resistance. So he said that it could be brake tested on the rollers with no ill side effects. I trust the guy so he did it. Sure enough no problems. But he did suggest that maybe I have a knackered diff - is this possible? what test can I do to see if my 4wd is still 4wd!? (It drives like its still 4wd with no horrible noises).

That was it really, oh except I failed on leaking damper he said he hadn't seen one that bad in a long time - well fook me but 1 week previous there was NO leak, now there's oil all over the hub and lower wishbone. I've read somewhere that this oil might not be from the damper but from the strut cartridge tube????

Also failed on missing middle silencer mounting - which at last gives me the excuse to take the car to pipewerx for a downpipe back system he he he

So if my shocks are fooked - where's the best place to get standard replacements (don't want anything stiffer for now).

cheers boys any help MUCH appreciated as my funds are at an all time low
(still, thats my fault for having 3 cars I suppose )

I'd go VAGparts, ECP or GSF in that order for the damper - buy a pair !

As for the brake test, they do say it is OK on a 2WD roller as long as speeds are kept low enough but the 2WD brake rollers can also do something else funky for us in that they rotate in opposite directions during the test - this means that no torque is transmitted to the other axle during the brake test.

If in doubt though - play safe and make sure to get the alternative brake test.

Not sure about the diff. Have read something about oil in the damper housing even if they are gas...

As for a new damper, try www.vagparts.com but it may be a little pricey for OEM. If you are going to up grade, std springs and Bilsteins are the way to go if you are NOT lowereing it. Fantastic poise and ride IMO.

      Good luck.

      Cheers,

      Steve.

Don't know. The previous owner bought them for me!

              Well done getting the shocks...

Vagparts was around the £60 mark when I enquired about a week ago (each btw) and I ended up with koni's as mine failed on one shock leaking.

They did the alternate test for my brakes as well.

                Standard brakes - 88% front - 18% rear
                Porsche - 77% front - 19% rear

Confusing hell out of me as to if something is wrong with them or if the test is not that accurate?

The reason you have less pressure at the front now is that you have bigger pistons therefore less pad pressure for same pedal movement, BUT what you now have with the bigger pads/discs/pistons is better heat dispersion.
So, sounds absolutely spot on to me.

So they took your word for it on the brake test and got you to test it on the road?
Why wouldn't my guys take my word for it!?

They would not do it no other way, just took the little box that they have and went up the road in the car, came back a few minutes later and said thats fine.

Good to hear about the brakes as i've only tried using them hard once because i've had a problem with wrong wishbones on my car and bad tracking but when I did use them it was enough to compress the front shocks and get the wheels to rub the arches
