Thanks for that, i guess €400 is about right as that was on the basis i would deliver the gearbox to them. Annoying thing is second hand box's are ~£300 but it would cost me as much for a ferry trip to come over and collect one

@mcandmar - I don't think that price is unreasonable if the work is of suitably high standards from good gearbox guys... But I'd also say that doesn't include removal & refitting of it from the car - PITA of a job. Well - more pain in the back, and the shoulders

I already changed it out with the box i had for my coupe conversion, its currently sitting on the driveway. I cant decide if i should make the a trip to the UK and pick up another box or get this one rebuilt. Its looking like a rebuild would be the cheaper option.

Why do you need to upgrade a 2.6 V6 box? They are plenty strong enough for a 2wd 150 bhp engine which only produces 225Nm torque

              Good luck with that!

I would be willing to bet that you could not get to 200BHP from a 2.8 with £500 and from a 2.6 with £1000.

There are chipsets available but the best of those only gives a max of 18BHP increase. Therefore, in order to get more power you will need to make some hardware changes --> reprofile the cams, port the head, change the IM and EM then custom map. I seem to remember that the 2.6 and 2.8 engines have different inlets and heads so you could investigate getting 2nd hand 2.8 parts and bolting them on.

However, all that said, it would be cheaper to sell it and buy an S2

id be very careful with diesel boxes. their ratios tend to be very long and different final drive.

maybe too tall to ever see peak

is there stronger gearboxs to be found in A4s and A6s perhaps such as v6 quattros, would be cheap as wouldent be to rare

how about the current generation of rs and s 'boxs with the asymmetric torque spilt front back, they are good for rs6 torque so surely the most hardcore tuned 5 would never destroy one those, also dont they have flappy paddle dsg aswell
someone has be the first to fit one and build a controller for it, not me though

both those ideas require the rear diff ratio be the same, or have to play about different tyre sizes, drag racer look anyone

How many variations of the 01E six speed boxes are there?

Mine in my S6 has a protesting first gear! Did the RS2's etc have any stronger internals?

                        This is why

                        This is official from Audi:

For the original S2 the 3B engine was de-torquified (to 309Nm iirc) because the new B4 Coupe model gearbox was unable to handle the torque produced by the outgoing 20v ur quattro, and the 20v ur quattro gearbox wouldn't fit in the new bodyshell.

So they knew it was weaker than the old model.

Apols if this is already discussed somewhere,

I've just bought a 2.5 tdi A4 01E gearbox. Want to link it to 2.2t engine on ABY chassis.
                          Questions that I have:

                          1) Are 01e tdi gearboxes direct swap? No other modifications?
                          2) I see the 2.5 tdi A4 01E gearbox has 3.89 diff ratio and I know 2.2t 01e gearboxes have the diff with 4.11 ratio, can I change the front diff from a petrol gearbox and put it to the tdi gearbox? Thus resolving the problem?
                          3) Are tdi 01e gearboxes really stronger than petrol ones?
                          4) Is the allroad 01e 2.5tdi gearbox the strongest of them all?
                          5) I see 01e A4 1.9tdi gearbox has the same 4.11 diff ratio, thus no diff swap, but it is stronger than petrol 01e gearbox?

I have an a6 allroad gearbox I'll be using in my car. Code is AKE. It was a 3.89 final drive too I believe but the diff has been swapped for a 4.11 which can be swapped out no problems. I did work out gear ratios using this box and final drive combo and I thought that they were absolutely fine. Mounting points are the same, slave cylinder fits the same, same senders and has mounting hole and window for a 60-2 wheel on the flywheel if you have one.
Difference are front drive shaft output cups, they use the never style tripod type inner cvs. They can be used if you can source the correct length shafts, but I just swapped the flanges for standard s2 ones or any other 01e that uses the same size inner cv.

Shift linkage is different too, so you either need to modify the b5/b6 style linkage or if you want to use the s2 style linkage then a hole needs drilling and will need a bracket adding to make the mounting provisions for the pivot cradle usable.

                            Hope this helps.

                              1) Are 01e tdi gearboxes direct swap? No other modifications?
Difference in the output flanges, as explained above. Also depending on the model front diff needs to be swapped to 4.11
                              3) Are tdi 01e gearboxes really stronger than petrol ones?
                              Not really
                              4) Is the allroad 01e 2.5tdi gearbox the strongest of them all?
                              Not really
                              5) I see 01e A4 1.9tdi gearbox has the same 4.11 diff ratio, thus no diff swap, but it is stronger than petrol 01e gearbox?
                              Not really

Strongest 01E option would be later model with wide first gear and flexible main shaft. They were installed on petrol and diesel engines. Most if not all >=1996 boxes are that type.

Allroad gearbox with low ratios had the most WOW factor, but are really rare and probably weaker than normal boxes. Still i would have one if i could

Slightly unrelated question, but how difficult is it to replace 6th gear on the 01E boxes for a 'longer' ratio to bring down engine speed for motorway cruising ?
