  • RS2 clutch problem

    Hey Folks.
Just stepped into the world of RS2... a year after I sold my S2.
There's a couple of things i'll need to look at, so here's the first...

My clutch pedal doesn't always retract fully... This is rather annoying.
The pedal goes right in, but only comes far enough out for the clutch to engage...
I need to get my foot under the pedal and pull it up to get it to retract.

After about 20 mins driving it seems to get better...

    Any ideas?

Master cylinder rod bent I'd say. "Exactly" the same symptoms I had.

          Thanks.
It's a bit odd that the problem seems to get less when i'm up to temperature... or maybe just going over 40mph.

A bent rod sounds plausible. Do I get at it from under the steering wheel, or from outside?

You get to it from under the s/w , remove the small shelf under the s/w, if the rods not obviously bent/bending, I'd be seriously tempted to bleed the clutch and see what the results are, and when you're down there look at the linkage and the general condition of the slave cylinder.

Is it safe enough to straighten the rod, or should it really be replaced?
I take it the removal of the shelf under the steering wheel is trivial?

I didn't mess about with trying to straighten mine as it had been rubbing inside the master cylinder and had worn part of the rod away.

Three (or four, can't remember offhand) 8mm bolts and it's out. Easy.

                  Thanks Jas.
Now that I've been under there I see that the mechanism looks quite simple.
The rod doesn't seem to be obviously bent.
Is the Master Cylinder still the prime candidate for the problem, or could it lie elsewhere?
                  Thanks,
                  JB

Mine was very obviously bent, the clutch was stiff as hell from about two thirds of the way down, and sometimes stuck to the floor where I had to hook a toe underneath the spring it back up.
Temp did sometimes play a roll although it never "felt" any different. The difference was the squeaking from hell I got when the inside of the car was warm.
I'm not sure what you can check now mate. At least it's ruled that rod out.

Thanks again Jas. I guess i'll need to look into this further, or pay someone to do it.
Would air in the hydraulic cause this problem?

Are you sure the rod is not bent ?as for the pedal to stick only other thing i can think of would be it is leaking or seals gone in master cylinder not causing vacuum affect for pedal to retract......Has it lost any fluid ?..previous owner do any work here?....maybe needs bleeding ..how are the brakes in general?

I'm not absolutely sure that the rod isn't bent. But it wasn't obviously bent.
I don't think it'll be leaking, because when I pull the pedal up a little bit it then pops right back out, so it's as though it's just stuck on something, and then freed with a bit of pressure.

Perhaps I do need to bleed it...
Previous owner had the clutch replaced recently, but he doesn't recognise this problem...
