Fitting the clutch slave cylinder: Hints and tips?

We've removed the slave cylinder, but can't seem to get it back on.
It just seems to be a pain to get it slotted back into position.
Any hints and tips on how to get it in there easily?

Also looks like the thread on the gearbox side may be worn...

It was a two man op when we did it....

I pulled the slave as hard as I could into the clutch housing and my dad slid the bolt in.

Needs a lot of force to compress the piston. Couldnt find anything safe to lever on.

Dont forget to loosen the bleed nipple before you fit as they can be really tight if its new.

Thread may have gone, as its really easy to cross thread due to the slave pushing its self out again!

Well the normal method is to dill the hole out tap it oversize and fit a helicoil.... but I cant see there will be enough room for that...

          Anyone got any ingenious ideas?

Have you tried the bolt without the slave cylinder to see if feels slack or loose?

When I fitted mine ( Genuine Audi ) the rubber seal on the end was too big to go through the hole. I ended up taking the seal off the old one which did fit. Might be worth trying.

So the saga comes to an end...

Dad managed to get the slave cylinder back in by compressing it in a vice, tying some cotton round to keep it in, then easing it into place.

As for bleeding the system: there was a yellow plastic thing blocking the reservoir supply pipe. As soon as it was cut out it bled perfectly.

The only strange thing now is that the clutch pedal only returns up to the first spring, it doesn't come out all the way, although Dad's convinced that it IS fully engaged.

Thanks for all your help folks!!
