    Gearbox oil?

    Guys,

Anyone know the capacity and recommended viscosity of the gearbox oil??

I'm thinking of going for Torco 70/140 to help with noise at high temps. Just wondered if the 140 would be too thick for the Torsen?

    Cheers
    Steve.

    Steve,

Here's the tech data you want:

Total capacity from BONE DRY!!! is 2.7 ltrs using 75W90 synthetic oil part number G052911A1 (1 Ltr can)

The correct fill level is 7mm below the top edge of the filling hole! and the drain plug is torqued to 40nm.

To check the correct level ie 7mm below the top up hole bottom edge, bend a bit of wire (coat hangar) etc, and use it as a dipstick into the fill hole until you get 7mm below the top up hole.

As for whether 70/140 is ok to use?.....

Dont use thick oils, just covers up problems until the become soo bad that it gets expensive, i mean really expensive. When the gearbox on mine was done last year, they stripped it down to find the input shaft so worn it needed a new one! MEGA MONEY! Luckily they stripped down 4 other boxes to find a good one! Luck was on my side. Someone had used a very thick oil in that as well to cure the noise! Re-con boxes aint cheap, I paid about 550 +VAT, trade tho. Labour was supplied by me, so i didn't have that to worry about.

I'm going to be changing the gearbox/diffs oil while I have my car ripped apart, and have been looking at what would be the best option. I've read that the oem oil is very good, and I've read that some aftermarket oils are better but you have to be careful what kind of oil you put it, esp. the diffs. Can anyone elaborate on this?

Its very similar to engine oil grades try and keep to the same grade, but go for a fully synthetic oil. Diff oils can be tricky, but only if a LSD is being used. These MUST have a special oil in them which is very thick. If normal gear oil is used then the diff wont work and it is fooked. AFAIK the S2 doesn't use an LSD, well either that or mine is ******ed!!

              Cheers guys,

I'll make up a dipstick as per Martyn's instructions and get myself some Vag oil or possibly Mobil 1.

I recon 2.5 ltr should be about right as the box isn't going to be dry.

              Steve.
