Is there a replacement separate of the complete shaft? I thought I read somewhere there was a ford boot that works.

Just like on AW, you need to use "Search". Here, searching on "Drive shaft CV" turns up these threads with how-to's, PNs and references to Ford Scorpio cv joints.
