    S2 91' rear diff backlash

    Hello guys!

Searched all over the forum but didnt find answer on my question. So. Who can tell me witch components of rear diff usualy says "bye-bye"? My S2 has a backlash and it knocks on gearshifts. CV are ok, diff bushes are ok.
Is is ok to repair the rear diff or its better to buy a good used one?
    Any info wanted! Thanks.

        What does mean "prop"?
How ever, everything that holds rear diff is in a good condition.
The diff's axis has a backlash where driveshaft comes on and I can turn driveshaft a little bit, this should couse the knock on gearshifts.

i mean is there any excess play in the propshaft?sounds as though the diff itself has worn though, not had one knock before though, only had a knock if a bush or mount is worn causing excess movement, not the exhaust knocking where it comes over the rear subframe?not much space there...

propshaft centre bearing might cause a knock if its worn too...

Everything that comes till rear diff is OK. CV-ok, propshaft bearing-ok, subframe bushes-ok, diff bushes-ok.. everything seems okey except diff and its joining axis that has a backlash

The backlash between the crown wheel and pinion should be around 0.15mm.

I've just re-build my rear diff and I took pictures of every thing I did, but I'm not in the UK at present so I can't post them up. I had to improvise a lot of things as the Audi workshop manual lists special tools for just about every stage of the job.

Try searching for MikesS2 web page, he has PDF files for all the workshop manuals on there and they are very useful.

Position 12 and 13 in the pictures are the ones wich are going bad usual. The crown and pinion backlash will give you wining noise when turning. Could be also from there but not soo.
                  Hope this helps!

i had a knocking that i thought was my diff mount, when i was changing gear, all the bushes where fine but the subframe was a bit loose. have you tried tightening everything up to see if there's any movement?
