lost all drive rear hub needed are they the same

Pulled out to miss the traffic a bit to sharp and bang horrible noise and no drive at all.
I think the hub has stripped, least I hope that's all it is. If so I need a another rear hub for a 91 3b near side, anybody got one for sale. Are they the same as any other quattro's or are they 3b s2 only
How much of a job is it to do, and are there any btdt boys on here with a bit of advise for an old man with a heavy right foot,

    S2 only afaik.

It should have survived that pull away, you sure the clutch etc is fine? could try lock the diff and see if the car moves so you know everything else is ok?

Destruction of one rear hub would be rare alright, but I don't see how that prevent the front wheels from turning. Remember that permanent 4WD transmission you carry around all day.

Sounds to me more like clutch or gearbox failure... Nout to do with a rear hub.

Can you start it in gear with the starter motor? (Would identify a clutch issue to some extent. If you can then it is not gearbox and likely to be clutch Master cylinder related etc)

You are obviously well ahead of us. I thought you were sitting contemplating, not in the garage getting dirty!

              Fair enough.

Not sure about the compatibility of other models, I will wait for others to comment.

              Cheers,

              Steve.

I sheared of the end of the left rear CV joint and the car would not move unless the rear diff was locked.

Let me try and work that out in my head... Firstly how on earth you shear a CV joint, and secondly how ALL of the torque gets thru a LIMITED slip diff (Mr Torsen in the centre) to the broken corner so that you get zero forward motion.

torsen isn't an LSD its a Limited torque slip, hence zero torque to front wheels, zero torque to broken hub, zero 'slip', centre diff will do nothing.

There's a video on youtube somewhere of an S8 with rear wheels on rollers, just spinning up the rears. Centre diff will only start adjusting torque split if there is a noticeable torque difference.

                    Correct me if i'm wrong??

I always think of Torsen as a type of LSD - in that it only has a capability (depending on gear size physics) to provide a maximum torque differential of 70-30 or 80-20... I can't visualise how it can get into this 100-0 situation...

And worse to confuse me that locking the rear diff changes behaviour in that situation. All that does is ensure that whatever torque gets to the rear input shaft is split halfway between each rear corner... How does that effect whats happening in the centre. My head hurts !

I think I know where you are coming from Paul. I get the bit about the rear axle transmitting ALL the drive to the broken side due to the rear axle diff. But agree with you, surely the Torsen transfers torque to the axle with the MOST grip, in this case the front axle as it has ALL the grip.

Anyone fancy taking a wheel off their car and testing this theory?

my head hurts whenever i look at the insides of a torsen!!!

If i understand it corectly, its because the torsen can only split torque if there is a torque resistance in the first place (which incindently could explain why the torsen only functions under acceleration). If there is no torque being put through it, it will do nothing. Maybe one of the forums buffs can better explain it....

Locking the rear would create a torque resistance as the other rear wheel is gripping, so torque is transmitted.

Not the one i was thinking of. I think in the end he gets off by using the handbrake, hence torque resistance.
