    Clutch master cylinder pushrod

Help ! Suddenly yesterday the clutch pedal went graunchy for about the last 2 " of travel. Gearchange poor. On inspection the pushrod between pedal and master cylinder appears to have fractured, but turning it on the adjustment has made it push in a straight line and restored ( temporarily) normal operation. Any BTDTs please - I assume from previous posts that it can be bought from the stealers separately ?? ( ABY S2 Coupe ). Thanks
    James.

The pushrod comes with the master cylinder which costs about £100. Stick to main dealer or VAG Parts as I had a GSF cylinder push rod snap again soon after fitting. Is your clutch heavy ? Mine was and I changed my clutch after the second failure. So push rods snapping may be a sign that the clutch is worn. The clutch is now as light as a feather

Peter, thanks for responding. Local stealer wants £170 + VAT for the CMC !
( But was kind enough to supply the EKTA illustration ). My clutch has always been heavy. I will attempt an "engineering" repair - Im hoping that I can sleeve the break so that I do not have to change the CMC just because of this. Cheers James.

Price from VAGParts was v good as i enquired about them too.

The GSF Master Cylinder, doesnt have the correct thread for that bracket that connects to the pedal so is no good, otherwise would have been fine.

        Has to be VAGParts.

Changing it tho is a piece of cake tho!

Its the slave cylinder which is a right bitch to do on the ABY!

When you remove the old MC, i found using a 1/4" drive ratchet and 10mm socket with an alan key bit in was the best way to remove the bottom bolt, the top one i used a long alan key and the end which allows the rotation so you can undo it from an angle other than straight on it.

Catch me on MSN if you need to tho, its on my profile.

          James,

Local stealer is trying to pull your pants down. It should be £170 inc VAT. There is plenty of mark up on them (can't say how much really - us stealers have to make some money ) as well so you could try blagging for some discount.

ABY CMC would be £97.60+vat, thats part number 8A0 721 401. I remember your problems Peter, that was a right pain wasn't it!!

Think mine is heading south too.... heavy clutch, last two inch of pedal travel is a little rough :-(

I know it's not fixing the cause of the problem, but couldn't a new pushrod be made?

It's only a matter of using a decent grade of steel in a lathe.

Has anyone got a dead one . I can see about passing it to someone who likes doing this sort of thing!

              Comments please.

Yeah it was a bit demoralising having two break in quick succession No problems since the new clutch was fitted though.

Sounds like you're getting the same symptoms as mine had. Mine was always heavy and there was a lot of free pedal travel before it actually did anything. Then a few weeks before the CMC failures the pedal started to stay depressed and not return.

Just an update. The pushrod is removable, but not with the CMC in the car. I was able to make a repair and the clutch is now much lighter than it has ever been in my ownership. It might be worth inspecting yours to see if the pushrod is not moving in a straight line - mine has what looks like a rubber coupling and this was deflecting. The repair is not easy to describe. PM me with a fax number if you want to know more. James.

Clutch master cylinder push rod failure again

The push rod on my s2 master cylinder has failed again on the rubber flexing joint.
What a crap design this is.
There must be a way of strengthening this. Has anyone ever used a stronger rod without this joint. Or is it accentual to have the flex.

That's why I designed a bracket to fix it... Not sure I have any left though. Must find a new machinist, now Kev's NLA.

And yes, it's a manufacturing issue, as the 3B etc is the same design but doesn't fail the same. May be worth pumping the joint full of PU Sealant
