    6 Speed Transmission

    Hi All,

I know the early 6 speed boxes fitted to the S2 and RS2 had a weak first gear and the RS2 was upgraded further down the line.

But does anyone know how much torque breaks the 1st gear etc?

Can the earlier transmissions be modified to take the wider first gear or would a new gearbox have to be fitted?

Charlie Smith is the online expert in that department. S2 Central links to his page. I dunno what torque supposedly breaks the original 1st cogs.

This was fixed in the middle of 1994 so any S2 or RS2 built after that date has the hard/wide 1st gear. Charlie's site has more info.

The RS2 box kept its 'CRB' notation but the internals are identical to the 'CGR' of an S2 to the best of my knowledge.

Upgrading the internals yourself is certainly possible, but would be best left to a thoroughly experienced gearbox specialist as there are umpteen weird and wonderful tools and procedures needed to rebuild one. I have zee manual and its mind boggling - gimme the inside of a chip anyday

      Greg,

Check out Charlie Smith's site for more information than you ever wanted to know on the Audi gearboxes

        spooky

All RS2's had the wider first gear and are identical to the latter S2 gearbox internals (wider first gear after CGR 77644)

My car is a MY94 and was registered in Jan 1994. The gear box code is CGR.

Does this mean it has the wider first gear or not? I'm guessing it isn't

How do I find whether it is after CGR 77644?

          Cheers

Similar vintage to my Coupe so won't have the late hard/wide 1st cog unless the box was replaced under warranty by Audi. If you get under the car you should see the number stamped on the 'box housing. It never appeared on the VIN sticker.

              Didn't think it would be

So I guess your chips are gearbox friendly then (assuming you don't drive like a loon).

Can you get full (0.8bar) boost in first gear. When I fitted my gauge the other day to check my turbo installation it seemed very difficult to get full boost in first. Other gears were fine and so was o/boost

Maybe I just wasn't treating it badly enough?

it was 2nd gear that was the problem. The gear is not wide enough. You can make an s2 box into rs2 but you need to machine out the casing to accept the wider cog!! Major work, not worth it, find a 2nd hand RS2 box and have it recon'd just to make sure its ok.

@Tom: I have to disagree m8, read Charlie Smith's site, the 2nd gear isn't the main weak spot in the 6-spd gearboxes, I'm sure of it!

Just read the site. I knew it was one of them!! I think i got confused about it cos my gearbox destroyed 2nd gear and its syncro (and 3rd syncro!!). Wont happen again.

If anyone is looking for one there is a 6 speed gearbox on Ebay for sale just now. Don't know if it's an S2 or S4 box though.
