im 99% sure the clutch is ok, at several times during the journey back i had cause to accelerate hard in 3rd to get through traffic lights so not to have to do another 3rd gear start and it was fine, no slip, no smell nothing....

To me it sounds like a problem with the clutch release bearing initially. You pressed the clutch and the bearing sounds to have jammed on the input shaft to the box.

Make sure the master cylinder isn't fubbard though, they seem to be a reasonably common problem but since you say it now works and kept workingas you drove home, I'll stick to my suggestion above.

After that? Who knows but I'd consider what happens to a box if you put strange pressures onto the input shaft and then drive it for a while.

I'd say that if the gear linkage to the box is still in one piece and hasn't collapsed or bent that you need to get that gearbox out and take a look at it.

          right, an update...

got in tonight and had a look at the master cylinder, looks brand new, and works perfectly, had a look at the gearleaver bushes etc, and the rubber ring that surrounds the rubber ball is worn, so that explains the origional problem of the sloppyness...

put that all back together and all of a sudden i have 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th again, but not easily selected clutch in or out.

had a look underneath, all the linkage it tight as it should be.

so the problem is in the box, is there something that could have broken, a circlip come off a shaft, a selector bent, or any of these things, maybe because of the excess movment it had at the gearstick end?

anyone got any pictures of the selectors, or the parts cataloge, family album, workshop manuel??
