Replacement clutch: what do I need?

    Hi

OK so I've got the replacement engine lined up for the Avant, but the clutch is long past it's best.

Not a problem - I have my clutchnet carbon fibre kit and 3B flywheel that was fitted previously, with only 3,000 miles on it. However part of the friction material was covered in oil so it'll need replacing

My questions is really, what's the cheapest way to get it sorted? Can I re-use the pressure plate if I can find an equivalent replacement friction plate?

    Thanks

Yep pressure plate can be reused, you'll need all the 3B bolts that are shorter than ABY, see Andy Casey thread.

I think 4wheeldrifter was using a specs friction and clutchnet pressure plate.

Yeah, my thread has all the part numbers of bellhousing bolts, alignment dowels etc. I'm running an OEM LUK clutch and it's fine although I should have skimmed the FW before fitting it so there is a touch of judder when you're being gentle. I think the best thing would be to source a Sachs OE clutch and get it fitted...

Only other problem is getting the non-adjusting gearbox mount to fit, you'll require some messing with either the engine mounts or modify the 'box mount with a slot. I think mine's between 5 & 10mm out. I'm going to solve the issue with some offset front subframe bushes and get some more castor in the process

Total cost of the clutch and bolts is about £200 delivered from VAG Parts.

When I have the engine out and balanced I'll fit something better than OE because I intend going above the standard power rating but I think it'll be fine for a k24 or modest RS2.

The engine mounts are slotted so the engine can move back to the correct position.

Yeah, not had a go at this yet as I haven't been up to it but as I was thinking of fitting the offset bushes anyway it'll save me a job.

OR you could go back to dual mass flywheel and original clutch.....

and that is because i have an RS2 OEM disc and pressure plate to sell....no bearing though...

Cool, thanks guys, for the 200 miles I drove the car the clutch was fine - felt very much like stock to me so keeping the uprated pressure plate + fitting a specs friction plate would be a good idea. And cheaper than a new setup too.

I'll give Andy's thread a read through, Corey's given me a box with all the bolts that were fitted so hopefully I'll only need to buy those that are mandatory replacements (flywheel bolts if I recall?)

@Vasillis - that is an option, i will still have the DMF... just trying to get the most of what parts I've salvaged here (and what's wrong with 'proofing' the car to 300-350 for the future :mischeif

                Cheers

                  Ross,

The engine is out and on the stand that we discussed. Let me know if you would like me to remove the clutch and flywheel before I ship it to you.
