  • 01E in a typ 85, speedo issue

Has anyone converted an 01E to run a mechanical speedometer? If so was it simple use of gears from an 016?

    Thank you!

In the process of doing this conversion on my typ85 90.
It is possible to get the speedo working. I am having a conversion kit made for mine. Are you keeping the 4 stud hubs or have you changed to the 5 stud?

This is taken from an article in OCtober's Audi Driver

The last issue was the speedo drive. On the S2 the speed sender is electronic, whereas mine is a mechanical drive. To get around this, the housing had to be removed, and the hole tapped to accept the mechanical worm drive gearing. But a 2 piece special adapter had to be made as although tapping the hole might seem a trivial job, there is a catch. It has to be done ‘dead straight’, if not the gear would not work smoothly and if the internal collar is damaged it is likely to cause an oil leak as an ‘o’ ring sits on this collar, therefore Patrick made a special guide to ensure this. Once completed, the mechanical drive from my 5 speed could be installed along with the replacement of the magnetic pickup ring for the new mechanical type gear as fitted to the Cq box that thankfully was a straight swap.

    Hope this helps

So it's just a matter of getting the threads in to screw in the assembly from 016.
      That's great.

Yeah, I am going Ur-q 5-bolt on my typ 85.

Thank you or should I say Dziekuje!

Hi Guys, has anyone tried to convert a cable drive speedometer to an electronic one on typ85? I found a german website where it mentioned that it is possible using certain speedometers from B3 Audi.

http://www.maustech.de/preiseaudi.html but no part numbers... any thoughts?
