    Gearbox and Diff Oils

Thinking I'm overdue some nice fresh oil for my gearbox (and rear diff)... Its just a road car - no exotic track action planned for me

I've skimmed some old threads on this but wanted to check something here with any oily experts and / or BTDTs from others.

Gear oil for 01E is listed as G 052 911 A - a synthetic 75W90 oil from Herr Audi - will any quality aftermarket 75W90 lube be suitable - need it be fully synthetic or will semisynth suffice ?

There was some funky Audi additive listed against a lot of 01E boxes but it got phased out circa 1996 - dunno what it actually was.

As for the rear diff its listed as gear oil GL5 SAE 90 (MIL-L 2105 B) - so again does any good brand (semi)synthetic 90W gear oil do the job here ?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Further web searches and I'm getting more confused...

That Audi part number on the gearbox oil is claimed by Fuchs for this stuff, which also claims GL5 compliance, yet its only 75W80 - WTF ?

Yet we have this other stuff from Fuchs (also GL5) which is 75W90 and aligns to a different VW Audi oil pec - VW TL 521 45-Y (G 052 145 A2)

      Confused !

Nice find Jamo... I'm drawn to the CRX75W90 stuff at Millers then - fully synthetic and specifically called up on Audi Torsen stylee 'boxes...

Seemingly its an 'upgraded' version of their TRX range... Seems to have more approvals against it - maybe no real benefit in this application.

Tisn't cheap - thats for sure...

One 5l can should be enough for gearbox (2.7l) and reardiff (1.5l) with enough left over. Looks like 60 quid plus postage - jees... But I'm overdue it at 140k miles on original gear oil (assuming some is still in there).

Brilliant - you can be my guinea pig beeatchimo if doing this job soon... Let us know how it goes... I need to bleed the clutch first on mine.

Watch out for the fill and empty plugs - they are 'TAF' - make sure you have the FILL plug loose before you empty anything !

Does anyone know the size of the drive for the fill and drain plugs for the gearbox and diff? Is it a special tool from Audi or another tool company?
I'm much the same as you Paul running on original fluids at 140k.

                    Cheers

When I removed my diff yesterday I noticed a rubber breather vent in the top of the diff casing, worth making sure that it isn't stuck fast...

Did you use any millers Jamo.
I got some off Lee at the first garage meet and changed mine, it made my gearbox a lot 'notchier' especially in cold weather starts. Dont think i'd use it again TBH.
