    Front CV boot split

    Hey guys

I've been checking the Avant over, on the run up to a much-anticipated engine fitment. The front offside CV boot is split, I recall it being pointed out as an advisory on the MOT that was performed a couple of days before it went in for the dreaded engine rebuild.

I want to do it before the car goes back on the road to avoid any damage to the CV joint, I had a look on GSF website and I can't find an Outer CV Boot Kit for the S2. They sell an inner and outer cv joint kit, anyone know if they do the boots and if so what the part number is? The one behind the wheel is the outer boot right?

Also - how do i get this thing off; do I need to remove the wheel and hub?

    Cheers

easiest with drive shaft off, but do-able with hub off, A new CV joint complete with boot and new abs ring is only about £40 I think, so save future greif and do the whole caboodle!

I have never fitted a new joint to one of these! similar joint on my UR 250.000 thrashed miles later, still perfect.
Just get a boot kit from TPS/Audi.

If you get it quick just change the boot, i think i left mine too long as i ended up having to replace it anyway. Nothing worse than doing a job twice.

/\ AS Mark said, catch it quick and repack with grease, it'll be fine. I didn't notice mine was split for a while and now had to replace the whole joint

I agree, just get a boot kit. The outer joint is easy enough to replace on the car anyway.

Enjoy i spent new years day messing with a cv boot on my A6, in the end it got sorted but should have been a whole lot easier than it was, it's not a hard job but if it goes worng then it just a pita, don't fprget to pull the abs sensor out of the hub first

You shouldn't need to mess with the ABS sensor. Some more clearance of the cable can be had by unclipping from the strut clip, but if all else fails then disconnect the ABS sensor at its conector just inside the wing - removing them from the hub can be a complete PITA.

Pretty easy job - make sure to get the CV boot kit which has the boot, grease and new bolt& washers... Watch the orientation of washers... Sure there is a BTDT on this job here or at Mike Dewars site maybe.
