New member and urgent Audi 200 20V Gearbox issue

    Hello to everyone.
I've been reding you a lot, but it is now that I have registered to solve an urgent problem.
I have an Audi 200 20V with 3B engine and the gearbox has gone bad.

I'm trying to find out if the Coup'e's S2 3B 5 speed would be a bolt on operation.

If not, I would have to open the gearbox and repare it.

What do you guys think?. How can I ensure myself that these boxes are interchangeable? Etka does not have any matching numbers between these 2 boxes, althought I gues they have to do with boxes mounts and small details....

    Any thoughts on this?

Thanks and I'll post pictures of my "on going reconstruction".

    Regards

It should be ok, same ratio differential.
Gearbox code will be different but thats because its in a 200.
I would take the damaged one out , you will have to anyway! and then compare any physical differences. (doubt there will be any!)

No this is two different gearboxes, shifter mekanism is different and the 200 gearbox are physical longer! Also brackets are different... This is not a bolt on conversion

I think I have some pictures of both on my pc at home...

I also remember that the ingoing shaft in gearbox is different. This is due too that the S2 coupe 3B and 200 3B have different flywheels. The 200 have support bearing for ingoing shaft placed in the end of cranckshaft while the S2 coupe have the bearing placed in the flywheel...

          I am surprised!
The 10valve 200 box is the same as a UR. Strange they changed for 20valve...

I will try and digg up some pictures tonight. The reason I know is that I bougth a spare 3B engine inkl gearbox from an 200 20V at same time I also had an extra S2 3B, 5 spd gearbox (01A) laying around. It was easy to compare when I had the parts loose.

totally agree with magarv, input shaft is shorter on an S2 box plus linkage is totally different.I did have them both side by side a few months ago and seem to remember the lenght of the box is slightly different aswell.i am using a 200 20v box on an old t85-90 i have.

All the 100/200/UR(10v/20v) boxes are the 016 type(with or without torsen)

                Thanks a lot guys.
For what I'm reading, except for the primary shaft, linkeage and case, S2 box should be pretty much the same, at least the "inside" of it....

Someone is offering a complete overhauled S2 Box, with all new revised and/or new components. Will it be worth it to buy it and make a hybrid out of the 2 boxes, economically speaking? I mean taking out the entire set of gears and apparel and putting them in the 200 20V's box.

How much does an S2 box goes for? Forum fellow here in Spain doesn't really "know" and is waiting for a "fair offer"...

Or, on the other hand, is better to go thru the overhaul of my 200 20V box?

                What do you think?

                Thanks

I would go for the 200 gearbox overhaul. The S2 gearbox are so much different that I dont think it is possible with any "hybrid"...

What is your gearbox code and what is the problem? Is the gearbox totally smashed or just some bad sync rings?

                    Thanks Magarb.
I have just being to the mechanic and this is what we came up with.
First of all, he is going to open the box, and then figure what is, in detail, wrong with it. The car was running with it, so is not totally smashed.

The box is out of the car and there seems to be a lot of play in the primary shaft ( without oppenning it yet). So, first thing will be to open the box, and then make a diagnostic on the problems found.
At least, I would go for:
                    - Bearings: All bearings are listed at the dealership for about 450 euros. I'll try to find them somewhere else as I have the measures.
                    - Shift rods assembly

This would have to be changed, almost 100% sure. And then we should go into the syncros detail, gears, etc.

Like I said , the car was running fine with box, except for a big "CLONK" when letting go clutch pedal, and then a "Weeenngg" sound when going in 5th gear....

                    I cross my fingers.

                    I'll keep you posted.
