It is true that prop shaft CV joints have a certain amount of plunge movement available but is that enough?

i think one those NVH things split prop nicer for the passengers and dont loss much power other than the bit bearing drag power, but when start pushing big numbers the single piece would be wise for reliability but you may need increase the diameter stop it winding up abit under high torque
i believe the rally cars ran single piece

other comfort audi had no reason go split

also people seem taken solid wrong why im guessing. youd keep the cv's either end, not only wise because prop would bend 1st time use it, but also its handiest way connect both ends....

I found a link to a propshaft fitting guide a while ago, I'm sure it was from S2avant...

I've uploaded the details on adjustment here.

The shims detailed in the adjustment table are as follows:

        2mm 857 521 143
        4mm 857 521 143 A
        6mm 857 521 143 B
        8mm 857 521 143 C
        10mm 857 521 143 D

They all retail @ £1.62+VAT each and you can virtually guarantee they are on Back Order.

I've been looking into using a single piece prop. I was thinking about a carbon one, but they're not cheap. I'm sure a single piece prop using a piece of 60mm metal tube would be easy enough to knock up. But what material and what thickness? Obviously the lighter the better, but it needs to handle the torque.

seemless mild steel tubing is good enough, i cant remember what the gauge used normally is, check out a web site like www.locostbuilders.co.uk, its for building lotus 7 reps but good info on diy style stuff like this, there is off course engineering shops will do it but youll need a design ete, or go to a proper tuning workshop they will be able design and build. each listed in increasing price

I spoke to recoprop and i might as well of being speaking to my left foot, i got no sense out of them at all (think the apprentice was on the phone).

I cut my prop in half and made an insert that fitted the ID of the tube and tig'd
it in then sent it to dunning fairbank for a balance, they are a very good company to deal with.

The prop on an avant is 2mm thick.

Most propshafts are hollow 2.5mm tubing iirc. A Friend from gloucester uses a company for his V8 stockcar propshafts when they cut and weld them for shortening ....
