    01A ratios

Does anybody know what 01a quattro boxes have a long 5th gear but still 4.11. i know some a4 quattros have the 4.11 01a but i have no idea what there ratios are....preferably a diesel.

i have searched and come up with not much family album isnt much help either as it doesnt show ratios and i dont think it can link a box with an engine which would at least give me an idea...

S2 gearbox (either way top gear is same ratio) gives 24.7 - 24.8mph per 1000rpm - 25mph is good rule of thumb ... so 3200rpm at 80mph in top
A 'longer' top gear will give you lower engine revs for same engine speed.

Some others for consideration for consideration --->

Looking at Bentley for A4 in North America - calls up 3.889 final drive on ALL 01A quattro boxes - you'd need a 3.889 rear diff as well. Dunno if all UK A4s had that same final drive ratio.

thats odd.....family album lists about 4 1996 A4 quattros having the 4.11 final drive

cheers for the ratios speeding but its the 01a i'm needing, not keen on replacing driveshaft, propshaft gearbox mounts and subframe looks like it may come to that though.

i'm looking for something around 2300-2800rpm at 80mph, guess that puts the top gear at around 0.58-0.72??

            cheers

Play with this lil calculator of mine...

You'd need something like a ratio below 0.6 in top to get close to 80mph at 2500rpm

Going for the 3.889 final drive makes it easier for higher top speed - but thats longer gears everywhere.

is it possible to retrofit lower final drive into an S2 diff?? the early 1.9 A4 quattro has a perfect final gear and is an 01a but it's prob not a 4.11.....

cheers for your help on this one

wouldn't be as simple as that mate as you'd need to swap the crown wheel and pinion together which are what gives you the ratio - the pinion is all press fitted and also AFAIK the B5 rear diff is competely different to the coupe (pinion is much longer) and so doubt the crown and pinion would fit without some serious machine work (could be wrong mind you )

BUT there is a 35/9 (3.889) crown and pinion pair listed as 017525143M / CAU diff code for the coupe quattro, so there is something out there for you - somehwere.. thats as much as I can see mate. dunno what car is was for or anything unfortunately

EDIT- 017525143M is from the UR AFAIK

The actual diff housing itself, not the alloy casing is common between the UR and S2, so the UR crown wheel will bolt onto your diff housing, and pinion should fit into the S2 / CQ20 diff casing, giving you a bolt in 3.889 diff.... or i might have overcompliated it and the UR diff bolts straight in - who knows lol.

lol no worries, 01E is my backup but as i said i'd rather not have too, although a 6 speed would be nice.

its actually an avant that i'll be using, i've seen on family album that the v6 quattro has a different ratio but i bet i'd be more likely to find rocking horse s**t than a v6 diff.

I know this is an old thread and correct me if i'm wrong but I think the DWN code 01A from the 2.4 v6 30v quattro is the only A4 with a 4.11 final drive.
Just waiting to get my hands on one now, then I will know for certain.

Good link that one Grillage. In Australia I think we only got the 4.11 in the DWN 97-2000 in Australia. I have been looking for a 2000/01 A4 to swap my 40v/01E into. Good to know there are other options with some of the 2.6q's having 4.11 final drive.
