You can get away with using washers in the bolts if you didn't want to buy new ones but the actually issue is the dowels
The dual mass ones are longer and when the spacer is removed, if you tighten up the bolts they will crack the bell housing.Leave a comment:

The dowels are different too ?
I thought bolt length was the issue...Leave a comment:

Dowels on the block, you must change them to 3B Items also flywheel bolts are different.Leave a comment:

Yeah - if you go 3B flywheel then you delete that spacer between block and gearbox.
BUT - couple of important things --->
1. you need to shorten the bolts otherwise you'll crack the bellousing
2. 3B clutch is different and the spigot bearing also - not 100% on whether the 01E input shaft works with 3B SMF spigot bearingLeave a comment:

Just how many types of flywheel are there?????
I have removed an AAN engine that was poorly mated to a 90 quattro 5 speed box. The clutch was not clearing the bell housing!!!!
I have now been asked to fit an ABY engine instead as the AAN has had water damage too.
However the AAN and the ABY flywheel are different but they are both dual mass.
If I was to use a solid 3B one instead will I need to fit the spacer plate on the back of the block or not??????
