    5 speed or 6 speed

I am fitting my aby engine into my cq type 85, but do i go for the 5 speed box thats on there, if so what do I need to change, or shall I stick the 6 speed box in, I realise that for the 6 speed to work I will need a s2 front section of prop and a 3b flywheel and clutch. Wondering if I will also need driveshafts?

If I go with the 5 speed box thats in my car I have heard that the gear ratios are really short.

I want the car mainly for track use and to get to the track and a bit of fun on the weekends, what do you guys think.

If I do go down the 5 speed route I can leave gearbox and everything connected in the car without removing, which helps. What clutch would I need? Standard? What will a standard clutch take, I am only after 280bhp for now.

Any help on this would be great guys.

Fitting the 6 speed to the Cq is easy with Patrick Carliers box of parts (as per article I e-mailed you. Go for the 6, you'll appreciate the closer ratios for the track. Pat's parts include a spacer so the present prop can be retained and no tunnel mods or subframe changes are needed.

PS.....I used a standard 3B clutch without problems. The Cq ratios are too short for the 20Vt. You'll also appreciate the additional few mpg when you are not on the track.

the old 85 q with 4syl engine may have the 4.56 ratio, the 5syl does, and may have 4,111, and mostly 6tr are 4.111........ se at the 2upper boltat the bellhousing; you will find the gear/yearcode like AAH 12345......
in the rear end you will find the stamped undreneath diff( to the road) like AEC. post it in this forum ,and i can decode the ratio..

Can I suggest you run the car with the 5 speed you have and try it - you may like it.
The 016 box does indeed have very short gears, and on long runs 4000+rpm at 80mph gets a little tiring and does not help mpg. But it's strong and more than livable with.
Having said that, I am now going the 6 speed (CYT diesel ) route and will be using the PAtrick Carlier kit (not cheap, but prefer to the 5 lug/wide tunnel option).

OE coupe 5 speed is much shorter than S2 6 speed, could work well for track use as you'll rarely use 6th. Top speed will be 150 maybe based on 20mph/1000rpm.

If you change to 6 speed then as mentioned, the rear diff needs to be matched.

Speak to RE2500, he's done this on a pre facelift B3 coupe.

Unlike the Ur quattro the Cq comes with the correct 4.11 ratio rear diff which simplifies things a lot.

diff has the same ratio on your cq as an S2 so don't worry about that.

From previous experience of having a 20vt on an 016 i would put the 6 speed box on if i were you.

Wow what a mixed bag of responses. I am trying to work out cost against usefullness. If I fit the 6 speed gearbox then I will need a 3b flywheel and clutch, also a front section of prop from an s2 and also a v6 or s2 front subframe, have I missed anything? If I use the 5 speed I need a 200 turbo flywheel, which I can get, a 200 or 3b clutch, and thats it? is that right? How much is the patrick carliers setup? I sense that I am going to blow by budget if I pick the wrong route here. Thanks again for all your help guys, looks like the gearbox problems will be sorted before I can find a wiring loom and ecu.

you dont necaseraly need a 3b clutch and flyheel to fit the 6 speed, you can use the aby one!!
also, i didnt change the prop on my ur to fit the 6 speed

its a lot less hassle to fit the 5 speed and you can allways change it at a later date

sorry to high jack ,but anyone know diff ratio of ur quattro?

did you have to move the engine back/forward at all to mate it up with the ur prop?

what engine was in your UR? MB or WR?

moved it back towards bulkhead...i had to space out the front engine mounts 5mm to clear the sump..also the rack catches the gearbox when its jacked up,but no problems when its on the ground
                          how thick is the spacer??
