    mystery "clunk"??

Had the V6 up on the ramps today as part of big service, had a look at what i was was expecting to be knackered gearbox mounts (Im getting a BIG clunking when coming on & off throttle) only to find they all looked ok. Any idea what else might be causing this??

The rear subframe looks well corroded as well so Im gonna wire brush that back and get it powdercoated I reckon. Could also do with a new RARB too if anyone has one?

    Any ideas on the clunk??

not convinced....mine had it, changed the entire prop assembly and still have it I think it could just be a fore/aft alignment issue for the centre bearing, allowing the prop to move on the splines for the cv's at each end. Changing the snub for the SQ version did quieten eveything down a touch though so might also be an option?

Thanx for the feedback, will change all the subframe bushes once its apart.

Whats the prop bearing like to change then, sounds like it could be a right PITA??

i did wirte up a how to and its a sticky in the guides and tips section. will need patience, a vice and a decent mallet/hammer to t**t it off once the loctite'd nut have been removed to separate the two halves of the prop. Its a reasonable simple job, just need to mark everything up to ensure balance and alignment otherwise you'll have bad vibrations above a certain speed (like i currently have north of 80mph) when you put the prop back on the car...

Cool, cheers David, just found it and printed it off - that'll come in well handy!

Wheres best place to get the replacement bearing nowadays now VAG parts nay more? I notice you mention a FEBI bearing as well, whats the score with that?
